IOTA Integrates LayerZero Protocol into IOTA EVM, Enhancing Cross-Chain Interoperability and Messaging Features

IOTA Integrates LayerZero Protocol into IOTA EVM, Enhancing Cross-Chain Interoperability and Messaging Features

A week ago, a partnership was announced between IOTA and LINKS to integrate zero-knowledge credentials into IOTA Identity. Now, the IOTA Foundation is continuing its efforts to bring its technology to the forefront of innovation by integrating the LayerZero protocol into IOTA EVM (Ethereum Virtual Machine).

This integration will enhance the platform’s interoperability and cross-chain messaging capabilities with Ethereum, Binance Smart Chain, and Optimism.

What Is LayerZero?

LayerZero is an omnichain interoperability protocol that features a permissionless, censorship-resistant, and immutable mechanism to connect the previously siloed blockchains. Developers can use its technology to bridge arbitrary messages across blockchains without compromising the security of their applications.

The protocol entered its V2 phase in January to enhance its architecture. This stage also includes improvements in the way it handles security stacks, transaction lifecycles, and trust assumptions. All these aim to unlock more potentially rewarding use cases for the protocol.

What the IOTA EVM and ZeroLayer Integration Means

LayerZero was integrated into the Shimmer EVM ecosystem at the end of 2023. The fusion is intended to strategically upgrade the cross-chain messaging scope of IOTA’s staging ground.

Following the launch of the IOTA 2.0 testnet, IOTA is now implementing the learnings it gleaned from the incubation of LayerZero within Shimmer EVM. With that, the IOTA Foundation has just deployed LayerZero’s immutable V2 Endpoint on IOTA EVM.

According to IOTA’s latest blog post, its injection of the LayerZero protocol will allow developers to create omnichain applications seamlessly. The protocol’s utilization also offers cross-chain messaging and asset transfers together with the use of OFT (Omnichain Fungible Token) and ONFT (Omnichain Non-Fungible Token) standards.

Lastly, it enables the smooth and permissionless interaction of all IOTA EVM applications. Currently, the platform has coverage of over 50 DLTs (digital ledger technologies).

What It Means for Developers

The latest IOTA EVM overhaul highlights IOTA’s transformation to a developer-centric ecosystem. The LayerZero integration also reinforces its role as the focal point of innovations within dApps (decentralized applications) and DeFi (decentralized finance) solutions.

Ultimately, this milestone is envisioned to accelerate builder and user engagement within IOTA and Web3 to further pave the way for yield-bearing opportunities and projects.

IOTA’s Latest Price Movements

IOTA coin’s price budged by roughly 4% in the past 24 hours from $0.2281 to $0.2371. However, as of 2:00 PM UTC, it retraced its steps within the $0.23 range to pull down its one-day gain to less than 1%.

Despite its developers’ latest announcement, the trading volume of IOTA’s native coin was 50% less than the previous day as only $15.5 million worth of its supply moved between addresses.

IOTA’s value today remains a far cry from the all-time high it achieved on December 20, 2017, at $5.69.
