Internet Computer Embraces Bitcoin Ecosystem with Runes Support
Apr 16, 2024 at 08:16 pm
The Internet Computer (ICP) continues to integrate with the Bitcoin ecosystem, adding support for etching Runes tokens, sending and receiving BRC-20 tokens, and creating Bitcoin DeFi applications. This integration utilizes Threshold-Schnorr signatures, enabling ICP smart contracts to interact directly with the Bitcoin blockchain and authenticate transactions, providing developers with tools for efficient, non-custodial layer-2 solutions, sidechains, and dapps.

Internet Computer Embraces Bitcoin Ecosystem with Runes Support
Zurich, Switzerland - As the Bitcoin halving and the launch of the Runes protocol loom on the horizon, Dfinity, the company behind the Internet Computer, has announced its latest move towards embracing the Bitcoin ecosystem. This integration involves the addition of support for etching Runes tokens and other Bitcoin-centric functionalities, further solidifying the relationship between the two networks.
Layering the Bitcoin Ecosystem
Dfinity's "Bitcoin layer zero" upgrade introduces the ability to etch Runes, an emerging technology that allows developers to create non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and other applications on the Bitcoin blockchain. Additionally, users can now send and receive BRC-20 tokens, a token standard designed for the Bitcoin blockchain, and construct decentralized finance (DeFi) applications centered around Bitcoin.
The implementation of Threshold-Schnorr signatures, a cryptographic tool, underlies this latest Bitcoin integration. This tool empowers Internet Computer's smart contracts, the engines driving decentralized applications (dapps) and blockchain activities, to decipher Bitcoin addresses and validate transactions directly on Bitcoin's blockchain. The full implementation of this functionality is anticipated this summer.
Efficiency and Functionality Drive Integration
"The [Threshold-Schnorr] integration focuses on maximizing functionality and efficiency," elucidated Aisling Connolly, Senior Research Scientist at Dfinity. "It offers a less complex alternative to ECDSA, the current Bitcoin signature scheme, facilitating deeper security analysis and robust validation."
Internet Computer: A Decentralized Alternative
Launched in 2021, the Internet Computer is a blockchain network seeking to revolutionize cloud services through a globally distributed network. This network's versatility has led to recent developments such as Bitfinity's plans to leverage the Internet Computer for creating Bitcoin Ordinals, a form of NFTs on the Bitcoin blockchain, and Bioniq's establishment of a marketplace for these Ordinals on the Internet Computer network.
Runes and Ordinals Fuel Development Surge
The advent of Bitcoin-based NFTs, known as Ordinals, and the impending Runes protocol have sparked a wave of development activity on the Bitcoin blockchain. On Monday, Franklin Templeton Digital Assets, an investment firm, expressed optimism about Runes' potential to bridge the gap between Bitcoin and other blockchain networks like Ethereum and Solana in terms of fungible token support.
Smart Contracts Interact Directly with Bitcoin
Connolly emphasized the significance of Threshold-Schnorr signatures in enabling smart contracts to directly interact with Bitcoin's blockchain and authenticate transactions. This capability provides developers with the tools to construct effective, affordable, and non-custodial layer-2 solutions, sidechains, and dapps.
Addressing Initial Key Setup Challenges
"The fundamental technical challenge in any cryptographic protocol lies in the initial setup of private keys, ensuring the system operates with the required security safeguards," explained Connolly. "Internet Computer leverages a sophisticated distributed key generation protocol, the result of decades of research, for the initial Threshold-Schnorr key setup and subsequent key refreshes."
A Dual-Pronged Strategy for Bitcoin Developers
Connolly outlined Internet Computer's two-pronged approach to attract Bitcoin developers: enhancing existing applications for greater decentralization and supporting the development of novel protocols. She acknowledged that some Bitcoin enthusiasts may not favor using Internet Computer for Bitcoin interactions but cautioned against dismissing its potential.
"While individuals may not require Internet Computer to inscribe Ordinals," noted Connolly, "developers seeking to build secure applications, eliminate custodial bridges, achieve near-instant finality, minimize fees, and deploy their applications immediately will find no other platform with such capabilities."
