Hyperliquid Heats Up: Leveraged ETFs and Wall Street's Gaze
Oct 17, 2025 at 02:48 pm
Hyperliquid is drawing significant attention, with leveraged ETF filings and Wall Street interest highlighting its growing influence in the DeFi space. What does it mean for the future?

Hyperliquid, the two-year-old decentralized exchange, is making waves. With the filing of leveraged ETFs and increasing Wall Street interest, the platform is quickly becoming a focal point in the crypto space. Let's dive into what's happening.
The Rise of Hyperliquid
Hyperliquid has quickly gained traction in the decentralized exchange (DEX) arena, outperforming even established players like Coinbase in certain areas. Built by a small team of engineers, this platform is designed for perpetual futures, handling impressive volumes and catching the eye of major financial players.
Leveraged ETFs: A Bold Move
21Shares has recently filed with the SEC for a 2x leveraged HYPE ETF, aiming to deliver double the daily returns of the Hyperliquid Index. Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas calls it "so niche it might just win," comparing it to the early days of smart beta and currency-hedged products. If approved, this would be the first US-listed leveraged ETF tracking a live DeFi protocol's performance.
But 21Shares isn't alone. Bitwise filed for an HYPE ETF designed to hold the native token directly, while VanEck has applied for a spot staking Hyperliquid ETF. This competition underscores the growing belief in Hyperliquid's potential.
Wall Street Takes Notice
Traditional finance is paying attention. Paradigm backed an $888 million Nasdaq-listed fund to hold HYPE, giving institutions exposure without directly interacting with the exchange. Executives from BlackRock and Coatue have also been spotted at Coinbase summits discussing Hyperliquid.
Hyperliquid's model uses trading fees to buy back HYPE tokens, creating a potentially reflexive system where higher volumes drive up token prices. The Assistance Fund, which handles these buybacks, has already amassed a substantial reserve.
Potential Concerns and Criticisms
Despite the excitement, there are potential downsides. Hyperliquid's Hyperliquidity Provider (HLP), an automated trading vault, sometimes trades against its users. While the code is transparent, this practice raises questions about fairness. Additionally, the platform's governance is heavily influenced by the Hyper Foundation, raising concerns about centralization.
My Take
Hyperliquid's innovative approach and rapid growth are undeniably impressive. The leveraged ETF filings signal a strong belief in its potential, and Wall Street's interest validates its significance. However, the platform's reliance on a reflexive token model and potential governance issues warrant careful consideration. While Hyperliquid presents exciting opportunities, investors should proceed with caution and be aware of the inherent risks.
The platform’s recent HIP-3 upgrade, enabling the creation of perpetual futures markets by staking HYPE, is a game-changer. It’s like giving everyone the keys to the futures market kingdom—provided they have a few million HYPE to throw around. This could lead to an explosion of innovation or just a bunch of really weird, niche markets. Only time will tell.
The Future Looks Bright (and Leveraged)
Whether you're a seasoned crypto trader or just dipping your toes into the DeFi waters, Hyperliquid is a name you'll likely be hearing a lot more. With leveraged ETFs on the horizon and Wall Street keeping a close eye, this platform is poised to make a significant impact. Just remember to buckle up – it's going to be a wild ride!
