Hong Kong Crypto Hub Aims to Launch Bitcoin, Ether ETFs

Apr 15, 2024 at 08:45 pm

Hong Kong's Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) has approved applications from CSOP Asset Management, Huatai Financial Holdings, and Invesco Hong Kong to launch exchange-traded funds (ETFs) linked to Bitcoin and Ether.

Hong Kong Crypto Hub Aims to Launch Bitcoin, Ether ETFs

Hong Kong SFC Approves Bitcoin and Ether ETFs, Aiming to Establish Crypto Hub

Hong Kong's Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) has granted approval to Harvest Global and Bosera International to launch bitcoin and ether exchange-traded funds (ETFs), marking a significant move towards establishing Hong Kong as a regulated cryptocurrency hub.

Despite receiving the green light, Harvest Global and Bosera International have not yet launched these ETFs. The SFC could not be immediately reached for comment.

This development comes amidst a regulatory crackdown on cryptocurrency trading in mainland China, effectively banning the practice. However, Hong Kong has been strategically positioning itself as a competitive crypto hub, rivaling Dubai and Singapore.

The approval of bitcoin and ether ETFs in Hong Kong aligns with the recent approval of spot bitcoin ETFs by U.S. securities regulators, which have witnessed substantial investor inflows.

Bitcoin ETFs provide investors with exposure to the price movements of the underlying asset without requiring them to directly own the cryptocurrency. Industry experts believe that ETFs will facilitate the entry of traditional investors into the crypto market.

Notably, Hong Kong could become one of the first jurisdictions to approve an ether ETF. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has yet to approve an ether ETF, and asset managers have expressed skepticism about its likelihood in the near future.

This approval represents a pivotal step in Hong Kong's trajectory towards establishing a regulated and attractive environment for cryptocurrency investment. It remains uncertain whether mainland Chinese investors will be permitted to participate in these ETFs, but the move demonstrates Hong Kong's commitment to attracting institutional and retail investors.

It is anticipated that the launch of these ETFs will further enhance the liquidity and accessibility of cryptocurrencies in Hong Kong, potentially invigorating the city's financial ecosystem and solidifying its position as a regional crypto hub.

CNBC's Yolande Chee contributed to this report.
