Hong Kong Crypto ETF Launch: Modest Inflows Expected, Analyst Predicts
Apr 16, 2024 at 12:30 am
Hong Kong has authorized asset managers to launch spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs, sparking debate about potential inflows and comparisons to the US market. However, Bloomberg's ETF strategist Eric Balchunas predicts a conservative inflow of $500 million, citing Hong Kong's smaller ETF market, access restrictions, and higher fees.

Hong Kong's Crypto ETF Debut: Analysts Predict Modest Inflows
Hong Kong has taken a bold step into the realm of cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds (ETFs), granting conditional approvals to asset managers for spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs. This move has sparked a heated debate among analysts regarding the potential inflow volume, with some predicting a surge that could surpass U.S. ETF volumes. However, a prominent Bloomberg analyst, Eric Balchunas, has cast doubt on this optimistic outlook, projecting inflows to hover around a more conservative $500 million.
Market Dynamics Dampen Inflow Expectations
Balchunas' conservative estimate stems from a careful analysis of the Hong Kong ETF market, which stands at a relatively modest $50 billion in assets. Moreover, regulatory restrictions may limit access for local Chinese investors. Additionally, the key issuers of these ETFs, such as Bosera, China AMC, and Harvest, lack the clout of industry giants like BlackRock.
Structural Challenges Hinder Appeal
Other factors contributing to Balchunas' subdued expectations include the lack of liquidity and efficiency within the Hong Kong ETF ecosystem, which could lead to premium discounts. Moreover, the anticipated fee structure of 1-2% is significantly higher than the competitive fees seen in the U.S. market.
Global Competition intensifies
Hong Kong's entry into the crypto ETF arena is part of a broader push to establish itself as a digital asset hub, following the introduction of a specific regulatory framework last year. The city faces stiff competition from Singapore and Dubai, which are also vying for dominance in this rapidly evolving space.
Listing Approval Pending
The Securities and Futures Commission (SFC) of Hong Kong has clarified that it issues conditional authorization letters to ETF applications that generally meet its criteria, but with certain stipulations. Applicants must subsequently seek listing approval from Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd. (HKEX).
Distinct Redemption Mechanism
Notably, the newly approved Hong Kong spot-ETFs will employ an in-kind subscription and redemption mechanism, where ETF units are directly exchanged for the underlying assets and vice versa. This differs from the cash redemption model used by U.S. funds.
Demand Remains Uncertain
The demand for Hong Kong's ETFs remains uncertain. The city currently has three futures-based crypto ETFs with combined assets of approximately $170 million, significantly less than their U.S. counterparts. The true test of the market's appetite for spot-based ETFs will come as these new products launch and investors weigh their options.
Analyst's Measured Approach
Balchunas' cautious outlook serves as a valuable reminder that the crypto ETF market is not immune to fundamental factors. While the introduction of Bitcoin ETFs in various countries undoubtedly expands investment options, their impact in specific markets must be assessed in context. In the case of Hong Kong, Balchunas' analysis suggests that inflows may fall short of the lofty expectations that have greeted similar developments elsewhere.
