Heritage Auctions' Numismatic Sales Soar Past $63.38 Million, Setting New Records

Jan 22, 2026 at 11:47 am

Heritage Auctions wrapped up its FUN events with over $63.38 million in sales, led by a record-shattering 1804 Draped Bust Dollar and a wave of top-tier numismatic treasures.

Heritage Auctions' Numismatic Sales Soar Past $63.38 Million, Setting New Records

Heritage Auctions just dropped a numismatic bombshell, tallying over $63.38 million in a whirlwind of record-shattering coin and currency sales. This ain't no small change!

A Blockbuster Numismatic Extravaganza

The recent FUN US Coins Signature Auction, combined with the Special Sessions for Ellsworth & Jacobson, and the U.S. Currency Signature Auction, brought in a staggering $63,386,877. This grand total showcases an undeniable surge in the market for rare coins and high-denomination currency, proving that serious collectors are ready to bid big for unparalleled pieces.

Leading the charge was an extraordinary 1804 Class III Draped Bust Dollar PR58 PCGS from The Presidio Collection, which fetched a cool $3,538,000. This isn't just any old coin; it's one of only 16 known examples, a true numismatic trophy that continues to command top dollar. As Todd Imhof, Executive Vice President of Heritage Auctions, put it, "Trophies like the famous 1804 dollars are always coveted by collectors, and the prices Heritage has been delivering for such numismatic treasures continue to surpass expectations." No kidding – this beauty jumped significantly from its $2.3 million sale in 2009!

Records Shattered Left and Right

The excitement didn't stop with the 1804 dollar. Auction records were falling faster than a New York minute across the board:

  • An 1880 Coiled Hair Stella, PR67 Cameo NGC, from The Costa Family Collection, Part II, mystified and delighted bidders to the tune of $2,074,000.
  • Its cousin, an 1879 Coiled Hair Stella, PR66 Cameo PCGS, also from The Costa Family Collection, set a new auction record at $1,464,000.
  • A rare 1829 Capped Head Left Half Eagle, MS66 NGC, soared to an auction-record $1,006,500, smashing a nine-year-old record.
  • Even a 1919-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar, MS64+ PCGS. CAC from Betty’s Walkers Collection, grabbed a new record at $79,300, affirming the strength of the Walking Liberty series.

The market for U.S. gold series rarities was particularly vibrant, with pieces like the 1867 Liberty Double Eagle, PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC, hitting $793,000, and an 1854-S Liberty Quarter Eagle, XF45 PCGS CAC, from the Presidio Collection, fetching $561,200.

High-Denomination Currency Heats Up

It wasn't just about the coins. The currency market proved it has serious pull, too. "These notes validate what has been known throughout currency collecting for a while: that ultra-high-denomination notes are coveted by the most serious of collectors," noted Dustin Johnston, Senior Vice President of Numismatics at Heritage Auctions.

  • A stunning Fr. 2231-A $10,000 1934 Federal Reserve Note. PMG Choice Uncirculated 63, unseen by many collectors for decades, shot up to $317,200.
  • A Fr. 2220-F $5,000 1928 Federal Reserve Note, the finest-graded 1928 Atlanta $5,000, snagged $244,000.
  • And let's not forget the Laramie City, Wyoming Territory – $5 1875 Fr. 402 National Banknote, which set a record for any Wyoming national banknote at $164,700. Now that's what we call Wild West money!

What's the Scoop?

The takeaway? The numismatic market is absolutely thriving. Todd Imhof highlighted that these results "might reflect the single strongest we have ever seen in terms of higher-than-expected prices across the board — from Colonial issues through every denomination." The aggressive bidding for items from elite collections like The Presidio, Costa Family, Harvey B. Jacobson, Jr., and COL Steven Ellsworth demonstrates a robust and eager collector base, always on the hunt for rarity, condition, and provenance.

So, whether you're a seasoned collector or just someone who appreciates a good story behind a shiny piece of history, Heritage Auctions continues to be the place where numismatic dreams come true – often for millions. Keep an eye on those catalogs; you never know what historic treasure will hit the block next!
