Hashed's Simon Kim Believes the Future of AI Hinges on Breaking Open the Black Box of Centralized Models
Jan 15, 2025 at 01:41 am
For Kim, CEO of South Korea's leading crypto VC fund, the urgency is clear. AI's unchecked centralization threatens to create a "god" we don't understand, while blockchain offers the tools to reward creators, protect intellectual property, and provide transparency into generative AI – which has been widely criticized for its bias and selective reasoning.

South Korea’s top crypto VC fund is calling for a “copyright layer” to ensure generative AI compensates rights holders for using their content.
According to Simon Kim, CEO of Hashed, AI is being centralized by a “god” we don’t understand, and blockchain is the answer.
In an interview with CoinDesk, Kim shared his concerns about the generative AI landscape, highlighting the need for decentralization and transparency. He pointed out that AI models are using content from the internet without compensating the original creators.
“AI models are just crawling the original content on the web and giving answers without compensating the creators. It's a big problem,” said Kim.
To address this issue, Kim and his team at Hashed are working on a “copyright layer” that will enable rights holders to track how their content is being used and reused by AI, ensuring they are compensated throughout the process.
“We definitely need a blockchain-based IP system to incentivize the original creator, both the creator and the remixers,” he added.
While Hashed has yet to invest in any decentralized AI projects directly, the firm believes its investment in Story, an IP management protocol that closed a Series-B round led by Hashed last year, provides exposure to the decentralized AI domain.
