Off the Grid: A New Battle Royale Game Powered by Avalanche Blockchain Technology

Off the Grid, a new battle royale game from Gunzilla Games, launched recently in early access on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through the Epic Games Store. The game is powered by Avalanche blockchain technology and quickly climbed the free-to-play charts, becoming one of the most popular games available.
One standout feature of Off the Grid is its Extraction Royale mode, which introduces a fresh layer to battle royale gameplay. In Off the Grid, blockchain elements blend seamlessly with the competitive gameplay experience. Although the crypto and NFT plans aren’t fully active yet, they’re anticipated to bring new dimensions to the game.
Here’s a closer look at this innovative title and the future developments that could change the way players interact.
What is Off the Grid?
Off the Grid is a third-person battle royale game where players form teams of three and battle across a large city map. Set in a futuristic world, players take on roles as cybernetically enhanced humans. The goal is simple: be the last team standing.
Unlike typical battle royale games, Off the Grid introduces an “Extraction Royale” mode. Players not only fight to survive but also locate and extract loot boxes scattered across the map. This adds a new layer of strategy to each match.
These loot boxes contain items that can enhance player abilities or add cosmetic elements to characters. This unique extraction mechanic adds an extra layer of strategic gameplay, differentiating it from traditional battle royale formats.
Off the Grid is built on GUNZ, a subnet of the Avalanche blockchain created by Gunzilla Games. While the current early access version has no live crypto features, developers have plans to integrate tokenized assets. These assets, including the upcoming GUN token, will support item trading, mission rewards, and minting in-game items as NFTs. The GUN token, still in the testing phase, is intended to serve as the game’s main currency. When the network moves to mainnet, players will have options to trade or sell in-game items within the Off the Grid ecosystem or on external marketplaces.
Off the Grid Gameplay Mechanics and Early Access Features
In its early access form, Off the Grid features the single mode Extraction Royale on a single map, providing a glimpse of what’s expected in the full release. Players are tasked with outlasting opponents while collecting valuable loot. Extracting these loot boxes requires reaching specific points on the map, adding a layer of strategy to the survival objective. Successfully extracted items unlock new weapons, skills, and cosmetic upgrades that can impact gameplay. The game is free to download for Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S users, offering easy access to all players.
After the early access launch, Off the Grid saw a surge in blockchain-related activity. Gunzilla Games reported that millions of wallets were created on the GUNZ testnet. These wallets let players interact with blockchain technology through in-game assets. For now, they serve as placeholders while players explore assets on the testnet. This setup helps players get familiar with blockchain elements. However, the GUN token and NFT minting features are not live yet. When the mainnet launches, players will see full blockchain features, enabling secure, tradeable NFT items within the game.
Gunzilla Games, the studio behind Off the Grid, was co-founded by Neill Blomkamp, best known for directing films like District 9 and Chappie. As a result, his vision adds a cinematic feel to the game, aiming to engage players with a storyline that spans around 60 hours. Moreover, this storyline places players in a fictional reality-show setting, enhancing the battle royale experience with rich narrative elements. Additionally, unique cinematic sequences play between matches, making each session more immersive.
Currently, Off the Grid provides limited content with its single mode, but Gunzilla Games has plans to expand with additional modes and features upon full release. Future updates are expected to include blockchain integrations, such as in-game minting and trading of NFTs, and full use of the GUN token for transactions and rewards. In its early access phase, the game is already accumulating a large player base, and developers have involved popular streamers like Tyler “Ninja” Blevins and Seth “Scump” Abner to build awareness among gaming audiences.
With millions of transactions recorded on the GUNZ testnet, Off the Grid has already achieved notable success.
