Green Lantern's Bright Future: US Mint's 2026 Designs Spark Debate!

Sep 20, 2025 at 04:05 am

The US Mint is set to feature Green Lantern in its 2026 Comic Art Coin and Medal Program. Design choices are sparking debate, with the CCAC and CFA split on the reverse.

Green Lantern's Bright Future: US Mint's 2026 Designs Spark Debate!

Holy emerald explosions, Batman! The U.S. Mint is gearing up to launch its 2026 Comic Art Coin and Medal Program, and Green Lantern is leading the charge alongside Robin and Supergirl. But the path to minting isn't always smooth, especially when design choices enter the ring.

Green Lantern's Coin Debut: A Fistful of Futures

The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) and the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) have both scrutinized the proposed designs for the Green Lantern coins and medals. While both groups found common ground on the obverse, depicting John Stewart, Earth’s third Green Lantern, things got a little more… intergalactic when it came to the reverse.

Obverse Agreement, Reverse Rumble

Both committees gave a thumbs-up to design O-03 for the obverse. However, when it came to the reverse, opinions diverged like parallel timelines. The CCAC favored R-03, showcasing Green Lantern’s fist with his power ring emitting a beam of light – Warner Bros. Discovery's top pick! The CFA, however, leaned towards R-05, illustrating a fist and power ring bursting through the Green Lantern symbol, with a construct in the background that nods to Stewart's engineering background.

Why the Split?

What’s causing this cosmic disagreement? It seems to boil down to artistic interpretation. R-03 is a dynamic, action-oriented design, while R-05 offers a more symbolic and nuanced representation. Ultimately, the Secretary of the Treasury will make the final call, so stay tuned!

The Bigger Picture: Comic Art Program

Green Lantern is part of the initial series highlighting nine DC characters. This exciting collaboration between the Mint and Warner Bros. Discovery kicked off this year with Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. The 2026 lineup will include gold coins, silver medals, and clad medals, all featuring the same obverse and reverse designs, with some minor tweaks depending on the format.

Looking Ahead

While we wait for the Green Lantern collection in 2026, keep an eye out for the upcoming releases of Batman and Wonder Woman coins and medals later this year. And don't forget, The Flash, Batgirl, and Aquaman are slated to join the program in 2027!

So, which reverse design gets your vote? Will Green Lantern's coin be a shining beacon of power or a symbol of intricate design? Only time will tell! One thing's for sure: the U.S. Mint is about to get a whole lot more heroic!
