Grayscale Moves $1B in Ether (ETH) to Coinbase Ahead of US SEC Spot ETF Approval
Jul 23, 2024 at 08:41 pm
Prominent crypto exchange Coinbase has lately been the destination of a significant amount of digital assets from several entities. The reason could be its attractive token conversion services.

Grayscale Shifted $1B in ETH to Coinbase Hours Before US SEC Approves Spot ETF
The prominent crypto exchange Coinbase has received a vast sum of digital assets from several entities lately.
One of the possible reasons for these transfers could be Coinbase’s attractive token conversion services. According to data from Etherscan, Grayscale shifted $1 billion in Ethereum (ETH) to the leading US crypto exchange (Coinbase) on Jul. 22, hours before the US SEC approved spot ETH exchange-traded funds (ETF).
A Jul. 23 X post by iChaininfo showed that 10% of the 292,000 Ether transferred to Coinbase was moved from the Coinbase hot wallet to the Grayscale Mini Trust, or wallet “0xab3.”

Significance of the Ether Transfer
This transfer suggests that Grayscale is probably pre-seeding money to ensure the ETF’s readiness for launch. Such huge transfers frequently indicate major financial institutions’ strategic positioning and pre-planning ahead of noteworthy market events.
According to a Coinbase post, eight of the nine recently approved Ether ETFs have been assigned to the Coinbase exchange as custodians. Already, Coinbase provides custody services for ten of the eleven spot Bitcoin ETFs that are now in existence, illustrating the platform’s influence in the developing ETF market.
Ether ETF Approval
The final S-1 registration statements, which are necessary for the ETFs to start trading on stock exchanges, were approved by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Jul. 22. This approval has completed an important phase in the operations of these financial instruments.
Fidelity, Bitwise BlackRock, 21Shares, Franklin Templeton, VanEck, and Invesco Galaxy are among those who have received the approval to issue spot Ether ETFs. Grayscale’s Ethereum Trust and BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust are two spot Ether ETFs that will list on the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq.
Notably, Bloomberg ETF analyst James Seyffart stated that Grayscale’s fund stands out because it has the lowest waiver cost, at 0.15%. Furthermore, a Bybit analysis revealed that institutional investors have doubled their Ether exposure from 6.54% to 14.29% since the approval of these ETFs.

Similarly, Retail investor allocation rose from 7.4% to 9.52%. With this increased interest and investments in these newly launched ETFs, analysts forecast a significant rise in Ether’s price.
