Grayscale's GBTC Halts Massive Outflow Streak With $4M Inflows
May 07, 2024 at 09:32 pm
Grayscale's Bitcoin ETF (GBTC) has reversed its outflow trend, recording consecutive days of net inflows. On Monday, GBTC attracted $4 million, breaking a four-month streak and marking the second day of positive inflows. This follows a $63 million inflow on Friday, reversing an outflow trend that had lasted 78 days. Despite the recent inflows, GBTC has experienced a significant net outflow since its transition to a spot Bitcoin trust in January, with a total of $17 billion withdrawn.

Grayscale's GBTC Reverses Outflow Trend, Attracting $4 Million in Inflows
On Monday, Grayscale's spot Bitcoin ETF, GBTC, witnessed a significant shift in its investment activity, recording a second consecutive day of net inflows. The influx of $4 million into the trust marked a departure from the prolonged period of outflows that had persisted for the past four months. This reversal followed a similar occurrence on Friday, where the trust received an additional $63 million, breaking the 78-day trend of net outflows.
Since its transition to a spot Bitcoin trust in January, GBTC has experienced a substantial net outflow of $17 billion. As of its website's data, the fund currently holds approximately 292,217 BTC (valued at $18.4 billion), significantly lower than the 619,220 BTC it held on January 11th.
BlackRock's IBIT Falls Behind Market Leaders
In contrast to GBTC's recent inflow, BlackRock's spot Bitcoin ETF, IBIT, has underperformed its competitors. On Monday, the combined net inflow for the 11 US-based spot Bitcoin ETFs amounted to $217.06 million, contributing to a cumulative total of $11.8 billion in investments.
Fidelity's FBTC emerged as the leader on May 6th, receiving a substantial $99 million in inflows, followed by Ark 21Shares spot Bitcoin ETF ARKB with $76 million. BlackRock's IBIT, in comparison, recorded $22 million in inflows on the same day.
Other notable inflows include Galaxy Digital's BTCO ($11 million), Bitwise's BITB ($2 million), VanEck's HODL ($2 million), and Franklin Templeton's EZBC ($2 million). WisdomTree's BTCW and Valkyrie's BRRR recorded no flows during the period.
Impact of Spot Bitcoin ETFs
Spot Bitcoin ETFs have played a pivotal role in influencing the trajectory of the world's leading cryptocurrency. In the months leading up to Bitcoin's fourth halving event, these investment vehicles contributed to the record-breaking rally. However, a subsequent slowdown in investment activity triggered a period of struggle for BTC, as these funds collectively halted the accumulation of coins for over a month.
A recent report by Ecoinometrics highlighted the dependence of Bitcoin's growth on spot Bitcoin ETFs, raising concerns about the future price trajectory of the cryptocurrency. Nevertheless, following a brief period of slowdown, there has been a recent resurgence in spot Bitcoin ETF figures. This renewed interest has contributed to the recent rally in Bitcoin's price, which has climbed above $63,000.
