Grayscale Files Applications to Create Litecoin, Solana, and Other Cryptocurrency ETFs

Jan 28, 2025 at 05:05 am

Grayscale, a leading crypto asset management firm, has filed applications with the SEC to create ETFs for Litecoin, Solana, and other cryptocurrency-related products.

Grayscale Files Applications to Create Litecoin, Solana, and Other Cryptocurrency ETFs

Coinbase and ProShares both launched Bitcoin ETFs in 2024, sparking a wave of interest in crypto assets. Now, with Gary Gensler’s resignation, a slew of fresh crypto ETF applications have flooded the SEC.

Grayscale, a major crypto asset management, has filed applications with the SEC to establish ETFs for Litecoin, Solana, and other cryptocurrency-related products, CoinChapter can exclusively report.

The firm has also filed for a Bitcoin Adopters ETF and a synthetic Ethereum ETF, demonstrating its broader ambitions in the ETF market. According to filings, the Bitcoin Adopters ETF will concentrate on businesses that keep Bitcoin in their corporate treasuries.

Litecoin ETF Filing Gains Attention Amid Limited CompetitionThe effort to launch a Litecoin ETF has seen little activity in comparison to other cryptoassets. The first filing was made in October 2024 by Canary Capital, a Nashville-based investment firm. Grayscale is now the second company to apply for a Litecoin ETF.

The SEC has indicated a potential approval for Litecoin-related products, and Nasdaq has already applied to list a Litecoin ETF if regulatory approval is granted.

However, despite these developments, Litecoin's price has not reacted substantially. Earlier rumors of ETF approval caused a brief price spike, but market interest waned after no progress was made.

One possible explanation for the muted market reaction is the absence of any substantial updates or developments on the Litecoin network. This contrasts with more active blockchains, which frequently pique the interest of investors.

Solana ETF and Other Products Highlight Grayscale’s StrategyGrayscale's most recent filings include plans for a Solana ETF and a synthetic Ethereum ETF. The Ethereum ETF would hold positions from Grayscale's Ethereum Trust and Mini Trust products. The Bitcoin Adopters ETF, on the other hand, is meant to follow firms that include Bitcoin in their corporate strategies.

Bloomberg analyst James Seyffart commented on the filings, saying:

“Grayscale filed for a ‘Bitcoin Adopters ETF.’ Here are the strategy details: it will be an equity ETF that holds the stock of companies that hold Bitcoin as a part of their corporate treasury.”

While these applications demonstrate Grayscale's aim to diversify its products, it faces strong competition from other issuers who now control the ETF market.

Crypto ETF Applications Explode After SEC ChangesSince Gary Gensler stepped down as SEC Chair, there has been a substantial increase in applications for cryptocurrency ETFs. This includes filings for products like meme coin ETFs, further complicating the regulatory landscape.

Grayscale submitted several applications in a single afternoon, aiming to position itself competitively in this rapidly evolving sector. The SEC's decisions on these products remain pending as it considers numerous proposals under increased scrutiny.
