Grayscale Drops Cardano: ADA Removed from Digital Large Cap Fund

Apr 07, 2024 at 04:02 pm

Grayscale, a digital asset investment firm, has removed Cardano (ADA) from its Digital Large Cap Fund (GDLC) due to its policy of investing solely in large-cap digital assets. This decision follows Grayscale's earlier removal of Polygon's MATIC and addition of Avalanche (AVAX) and XRP in January 2023. Despite the removal, ADA's price has not been significantly impacted, although it has experienced a decline in the past week.

Grayscale Exits Cardano Train: ADA Removed from Digital Large Cap Fund

In a significant move, Grayscale Investments, a prominent digital asset investment firm, has removed Cardano (ADA) from its Digital Large Cap Fund (GDLC). This decision, announced as part of Grayscale's quarterly rebalancing, has sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency community.

Grayscale, known for offering investment products in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other digital assets to institutional and individual investors, has been a major player in the cryptocurrency market. Its exclusion of ADA from its flagship fund has raised concerns about the future prospects of the altcoin.

According to Grayscale, the decision to remove ADA was based on the fund's investment strategy, which focuses solely on a basket of large-cap digital assets. A company spokesperson explained that "every quarter we rebalance and update the components of our three multi-asset funds, including the GDLC."

The Digital Large Cap Fund, which invests in a group of major digital assets, replaced ADA with other top cryptocurrencies, including Avalanche (AVAX) and XRP. This move follows Grayscale's earlier decision to remove Polygon's MATIC from the fund in January of this year.

ADA's inclusion in Grayscale's fund in 2021, when it was the third-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, was seen as a major endorsement for the altcoin. Its subsequent removal has sent conflicting signals to investors, with some expressing concern and others viewing it as a strategic move by Grayscale.

Bitwise 10 Crypto Index Fund, another digital asset fund manager, has a different approach to ADA. Its fund includes a small portion of ADA (around 1.1%), reflecting the top 10 valuable digital assets in the market. This suggests that some fund managers still see value in ADA, despite Grayscale's decision.

The news of Grayscale's ADA removal has had a mixed impact on the coin's price. While it initially sparked a decline, ADA has since recovered somewhat. However, the overall market sentiment and ongoing regulatory concerns have weighed heavily on the cryptocurrency market, including ADA.

Despite the recent volatility, ADA remains a significant player in the cryptocurrency landscape. Its strong community, technological advancements, and use cases in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space continue to attract investors.

Grayscale's decision to remove ADA from its GDLC is a reminder of the dynamic nature of the cryptocurrency market. It also highlights the importance of diversification for investors and the need to consider the investment objectives and strategies of individual funds before making investment decisions.
