Gold Rarity Rocks Heritage Auctions: $2 Million Coins and a Bullish Market
Sep 23, 2025 at 08:06 am
Heritage Auctions sees gold rarities soar, with multiple coins topping $2 million. An 1880 Coiled Hair Stella leads the charge, signaling a hot market for numismatics.

The world of numismatics is buzzing, and Heritage Auctions is at the epicenter. Get ready to dive into a world where gold rarity meets high bids, because we're talking about coins hitting the $2 million mark – and then some!
Heritage Auctions: Where Gold Rarity Reigns
Heritage Auctions' recent ANA U.S. Coins Signature Auction was a showstopper, raking in a staggering $51,171,731. When combined with the ANA World & Ancient Coins Platinum Session, the total soared to $68,126,706. What fueled this frenzy? Three words: Gold. Rare. Coins.
The $2 Million Club: Three Coins That Conquered
Let's talk about the headliners. First up, an 1880 Coiled Hair Stella gold $4 pattern coin, graded Proof 67, commanded a jaw-dropping $2.28 million. This beauty, one of only nine known examples, isn't just a coin; it's a piece of history.
But wait, there's more! An 1879 Liberty Head Quintuple Stella gold $20 pattern coin, graded Proof 64 Deep Cameo, fetched $2,160,000. Only five of these exist, with one residing permanently in the Smithsonian. Talk about exclusive!
Rounding out the trio is an 1874 Bickford $10 pattern coin, graded Proof 65 Deep Cameo, which sold for $2,040,000. This rarity? Only two are known to exist. It previously set a record at Heritage in 2022.
The Costa Family Collection: A Trove of Treasures
These incredible coins all came from The Costa Family Collection, Part I. This single collection accounted for 94 lots that went to new collectors. Other highlights included an 1879 Coiled Hair gold $4 Stella pattern that sold for $1.44 million and an 1852 Augustus Humbert U.S. Assay Office of Gold $50 slug that realized $690,000.
A Bullish Market: What's Driving the Gold Rush?
Todd Imhof, Executive Vice President of Heritage Auctions, sums it up best: “As we continue deeper into this bullish market for numismatics, there is often doubt about the collecting community’s capacity to absorb these amazing, expensive rarities. But auction after auction, Heritage is delivering new and/or emboldened bidders, which results in highly satisfying prices for our consignors.”
It seems the demand for rare coins is red hot. Coins from The Alymaya Collection also soared, with a 1921 Double Eagle fetching $1,560,000. Even a San Francisco Mint gold ingot from 1951 – previously thought to be no longer in production – sold for $1,326,000.
Parting Thoughts: Get Your Bids Ready!
So, what does all this mean? If you've got a rare gold coin gathering dust, now might be the time to dust it off! The market is clearly hungry for these pieces of history, and Heritage Auctions seems to be the place where the magic happens. Who knows, you might just strike gold yourself.
