Genesis Transmits Substantial Crypto Assets to Gemini, Raising Concerns Over Potential Sale

New York, May 10, 2024 - Genesis Trading, a prominent crypto lending firm, has sparked concerns within the industry after transferring a significant portfolio of altcoins valued at approximately $33.6 million to the Gemini cryptocurrency exchange. This development has raised questions regarding the company's intentions for the transferred assets.

According to a meticulous analysis by Lookonchain, a leading blockchain analytics firm, Genesis Trading's wallets recently moved over 30 different altcoins to Gemini. The transferred assets include:

  • 16.4 million GRT (worth approximately $4.69 million)
  • 396 million AMP (worth approximately $2.94 million)
  • 123 thousand INJ (worth approximately $2.93 million)
  • 32 thousand AAVE (worth approximately $2.88 million)
  • 970 PAXG (worth approximately $2.26 million)
  • 9.19 million BAT (worth approximately $2.25 million)

Notably, these transfers represent over 30 separate altcoin assets, including CRV, APE, LINK, and SUSHI.

This latest move by Genesis Trading comes amidst ongoing concerns surrounding the company's financial stability. In November 2022, Genesis suspended customer withdrawals, citing liquidity issues. Subsequently, on January 19, 2023, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York.

Since its bankruptcy filing, Genesis has reportedly held approximately $2.41 billion worth of crypto assets, including significant holdings of Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Compound (COMP), Avalanche (AVAX), SHIB, RNDR, and MKR. In addition to these cryptocurrencies, Genesis also holds $1.4 billion in Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) shares, $170 million in Grayscale Ethereum Trust (ETHE) shares, and $38 million in Grayscale Ethereum Classic Trust (ETCG) shares.

According to a February 4, 2023 filing with the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York, Genesis indicated its intention to liquidate $1.6 billion worth of trust assets held by its master trusts. This move was reportedly aimed at mitigating potential price volatility in Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Ethereum Classic, thereby ensuring that Genesis' debt repayment plans would remain unaffected.

The transfer of altcoins to Gemini has raised questions about whether Genesis is preparing to offload these assets as part of its ongoing efforts to raise liquidity. While the company has not officially confirmed its intentions, the significant value of the transferred assets and Genesis' current financial situation suggest that a sale is a distinct possibility.

Industry analysts are closely monitoring the situation, awaiting further developments that could shed light on Genesis' true intentions for the transferred altcoins. The potential sale of these assets could have a significant impact on the broader crypto market, influencing the prices of the affected altcoins and the overall sentiment towards Genesis and other crypto lending firms.
