FTX and Alameda Research Liquidate Millions in Assets to Repay Debts

May 10, 2024 at 05:30 pm

Bankrupt crypto exchanges FTX and Alameda Research have embarked on a liquidation spree, selling off $97.35 million in assets, including substantial holdings of SOL, ETH, and FTT. This move by FTX aims to repay creditors, but it raises concerns about market instability as Alameda's significant assets hint at further potential sales. Despite a repayment plan to compensate most creditors in full, concerns linger over the handling of crypto assets in bankruptcy and the preference for crypto settlements amid the bear market.

FTX and Alameda Research Liquidate Millions in Assets to Repay Debts

FTX and Alameda Research Engage in Aggressive Asset Liquidation amid Bankruptcy Proceedings

In a strategic move to repay their substantial debts, bankrupt crypto firms FTX and Alameda Research have embarked on a concerted effort to liquidate their altcoin holdings. Blockchain analytics from Arkham Intelligence reveal that over the past month, wallets associated with the two entities have transferred a staggering $97.35 million worth of assets for liquidation purposes.

FTX, in particular, has opted to sell off its Solana (SOL) holdings in an attempt to settle its obligations. This decision has raised concerns among market observers, who speculate that such a large influx of SOL tokens into the market could destabilize its price in the near future.

Detailed Overview of Liquidated Assets

FTX's liquidation efforts have focused primarily on BOBA and ETH tokens, with approximately $33.85 million and $11.22 million worth of each being sold, respectively. Moreover, the company retains a dominant position in the market, controlling approximately 78% of the FTT token supply.

Alameda Research, closely linked to FTX, holds a diverse portfolio of assets, including $140 million in WLD, $102 million in BIT, $93 million in BTC, and $48 million in STG. This suggests that further sales by Alameda could be on the horizon.

Repayment Plans and Creditor Concerns

In the ongoing bankruptcy proceedings, FTX has proposed a repayment plan that aims to compensate creditors, particularly those owed $50,000 or less, with 118% of their initial claims. Approximately 98% of creditors are projected to receive full compensation under this plan.

However, many creditors have expressed reservations about the repayment strategy, preferring settlements in cryptocurrencies rather than fiat currency. This preference stems from concerns about the potential undervaluation of crypto assets during the prolonged bear market conditions that persisted throughout 2022.

Market Impact and Ongoing Questions

The asset sales by FTX and Alameda Research have reverberated throughout the crypto community, generating apprehension among creditors and investors. With FTX yet to address the demand for crypto-based settlements, questions loom large over the handling of crypto assets within the framework of bankruptcy proceedings.

The ongoing developments raise fundamental questions about the treatment of cryptocurrencies in insolvency cases, highlighting the need for clear and comprehensive guidelines to safeguard the interests of both creditors and investors within the rapidly evolving crypto ecosystem.
