Decentralized data storage technology is increasingly showing its potential in addressing communication and data security challenges in space.

The Filecoin Foundation and Lockheed Martin Space have successfully transmitted data in space using a version of the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) via Earth-orbiting satellites, President of the Filecoin Foundation Marta Belcher has revealed.
Speaking at the Consensus 2025 conference in Toronto, Belcher explained how the team adapted this system for use in space and successfully tested it.
The non-profit Filecoin Foundation manages the Filecoin (FIL) decentralized cloud storage protocol, which uses the IPFS web protocol for storing data, while Lockheed Martin is one of the largest aerospace companies in the world.
IPFS is a content-based web protocol that aims to improve data efficiency, privacy and resilience compared to traditional web protocols such as HTTP, which identify data based on location. This provides an added advantage in the process of transmitting data in space.
"This architecture is very suitable for use in space because it can reduce delays, overcome data damage due to radiation and enable cryptographic verification to ensure data is not manipulated," said Belcher.
This architecture is also able to quickly identify and retrieve data from nearby locations.
"There is a time lag of a few seconds from the Moon and a few minutes from Mars," Belcher noted.
"With IPFS, you can simply search for a content ID and retrieve data from a nearby location - either your own device, a nearby satellite or a station on the Moon."
IPFS uses a distributed architecture that stores copies of data at various locations within a global network, reducing dependency on centralized data centers.
Having multiple copies of this data increases reliability, especially in environments where hardware is prone to damage, and helps maintain the integrity of sensitive material such as satellite imagery.
Interest in decentralized archive storage is growing among media companies, and the Filecoin Foundation is also exploring potential military uses for the technology, added Belcher.
"This technology could be very beneficial to the media world in general - having a huge archive and the ability to access footage from all over the world whenever needed," he says.
The FIL token is a utility token used in the Filecoin ecosystem. According to Pintu data, the total market capitalization of this token is about $1.8 billion.
