Wells Fargo Invests in Grayscale Spot Bitcoin ETF
May 11, 2024 at 02:23 am
Wells Fargo, a prominent U.S. bank, has joined the ranks of financial institutions embracing Bitcoin investments. The bank has invested in Grayscale's spot Bitcoin ETF, acquiring shares in ProShares Bitcoin Strategy ETF and Grayscale Bitcoin Trust, totaling an investment of over $143,000.

Wells Fargo Invests in Grayscale Spot Bitcoin ETF
San Francisco, California – Wells Fargo & Company, one of the largest banks in the United States, has invested in Grayscale Investments' spot Bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF) offering.
According to a recent filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), Wells Fargo has acquired a position in both Grayscale's Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) and ProShares' Bitcoin Strategy ETF (BITO).
The filing reveals that Wells Fargo holds 37 shares of BITO, which provides exposure to Bitcoin futures, and 2,245 shares of GBTC, which has recently converted into an ETF. Additionally, the bank's portfolio includes 52 shares of Bitcoin Depot (BTCD), a company that facilitates Bitcoin purchases through automated teller machines (ATMs).
The total value of Wells Fargo's Bitcoin investments exceeds $143,000. However, the SEC cautions against relying solely on the information provided by financial institutions, as it may not be complete or accurate.
In February 2023, Wells Fargo's asset management division, along with Merrill Lynch's investment division, began offering access to Bitcoin ETFs to eligible clients. These clients are required to maintain brokerage accounts and request Bitcoin ETFs explicitly.
A Wells Fargo spokesperson has confirmed the availability of spot Bitcoin ETFs through Wells Fargo Advisors and Wellstrade Bank's online platform. UBS Group AG also offers SEC-approved spot Bitcoin ETFs to select asset management clients with brokerage accounts.
Wells Fargo's significant investment in Bitcoin ETFs reflects the growing recognition of digital assets among major financial institutions. In 2021, the bank applied to register a passive fund in Bitcoin and provided high-net-worth clients with tools to access the cryptocurrency. At the time, Wells Fargo's asset and investment management division managed approximately $2 trillion in assets.
The bank's foray into Bitcoin investments marks an expansion of its involvement in the cryptocurrency and blockchain space. Wells Fargo has previously explored the use of blockchain technology for remittance and trade finance applications.
