When to Expect the Launch of Spot Ethereum ETFs

May 28, 2024 at 05:30 pm

The crypto community is on the cusp of potentially welcoming spot Ethereum ETFs, with the financial community closely monitoring the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for its impending decision.

When to Expect the Launch of Spot Ethereum ETFs

The crypto community eagerly awaits the potential approval of spot Ethereum ETFs, with the financial world keeping a close eye on the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for its upcoming decision. Recently, key industry figures shared their insights and predictions on the timeline for approval, drawing from their deep understanding of the SEC's past actions and the current market dynamics.

When to Expect the Launch of Spot Ethereum ETFs

Well-known in the ETF industry as the host of the ETF Prime podcast, Nate Geraci has been open about his expectations for the SEC's approval process.

Geraci shared his perspective through Axios, stating:

When will SEC approve spot eth ETF registration statements? Nobody knows for sure, but my expectation would be next few weeks. 2-3 months max. IMO, heavy lifting already done following spot btc ETFs & eth futures ETFs. Just a matter of how long SEC wants to string this out.

His comments align with a broader industry sentiment that the groundwork laid by previous cryptocurrency ETF approvals could expedite the process for Ethereum. Joining the conversation, Eric Balchunas, Senior ETF Analyst at Bloomberg, offered a specific timeframe, suggesting “July 4th feels like a good over/under.”

Geraci reacted positively to this timeline, saying:

I like it… I'll take under, but right timeframe IMO. Fits well w/ 19b-4 approval heading into Memorial Day weekend too.

This exchange highlights a critical window that industry experts are monitoring closely.

The regulatory journey for Ethereum ETFs has been complex, marked by anticipation and delays. Notably, eight Spot Ethereum ETFs received a surprising 19b-4 approval on May 23, a crucial step in the process.

However, as Bloomberg analyst James Seyffart points out:

We also need S-1 approvals. It could be weeks to months before we see S-1 approvals and thus a live Eth ETF.

The S-1 form, a primary document required for registering new securities with the SEC, presents another layer of approval that must be cleared before the launch of any spot Ethereum ETF.

Seyffart’s comment also highlights a common misconception regarding the simultaneous approval of 19b-4 and S-1 forms, as observed with the spot Bitcoin ETFs. He explained that the SEC usually mandates a waiting period between approvals and the launch of the ETF products, which involves detailed bi-directional communication between the regulator and applicants.

The conversation between Geraci and Balchunas not only conveys their expectations but also reflects the broader industry optimism. Their discussion suggests that the prior approvals of spot Bitcoin ETFs and Ethereum futures ETFs have likely addressed some of the regulatory complexities that could have otherwise delayed the swift approval of spot Ethereum ETFs.

At the time of writing, ETH trades at $3,860.
