Ethereum Faces Perilous Downturn, Analysts Predict Dive to $2500

May 11, 2024 at 07:47 pm

Recent crypto market downturn has led to significant value drops in major assets, with Ethereum (ETH) facing pronounced bearish trends. Crypto analysts predict further declines, anticipating a drop to $2500 due to Ethereum's weakened fundamentals and declining network activity on the mainnet. The correlation with Bitcoin, along with developments in Ethereum Layer 2s and potential spot ETF applications, continue to shape the outlook for Ethereum's price trajectory.

Ethereum Faces Perilous Downturn, Analysts Predict Dive to $2500

Ethereum in Peril as Market Turmoil Signals Impending Downfall

The cryptocurrency market has been reeling from a recent downturn, with major assets like Ethereum and Bitcoin experiencing significant value drops. Among these, Ethereum (ETH) has emerged as a particular cause for concern, with analysts predicting further declines for the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization.

Analysts Warn of Ethereum's Potential Plunge to $2500

In a recent advisory, crypto research firm 10X Analysis has issued a dire warning, suggesting that Ethereum could be on a trajectory towards $2500 due to its weakening fundamentals. The agency notes that Ethereum's performance has been inconsistent in the current market cycle, deviating from its historical role as a catalyst for bullish runs.

Furthermore, 10X Analysis highlights Ethereum's strong correlation with Bitcoin, with an R-squared value of 95%. The agency contends that Ethereum's declining fundamentals pose an obstacle to widespread fiat inflows into the crypto ecosystem, which would hinder Bitcoin's ascent.

Daniel Yan, Founder and CIO of Kryptanium Capital, echoes these concerns, stating, "Ethereum continues to disappoint from fundamental and technical perspectives. If support at $2950 breaks, we could witness a sharp decline to the $2500-$2600 range."

Network Activity and ETF Developments Raise Further Concerns

Compounding the negative outlook for Ethereum is a decline in network activity on its mainnet, resulting in record-low average transaction fees. Data from blockchain analytical platform IntoTheBlock reveals that an increasing number of transactions are being settled on Ethereum Layer 2s, with the three largest L2s accounting for a record 82% of all Ethereum transactions in April.

On the regulatory front, the prospects for spot Ethereum exchange-traded fund (ETF) approval remain uncertain. On May 10, Ark 21 Shares revised their spot Ethereum ETF proposal, notably removing plans for staking. Bloomberg ETF analyst Eric Balchunas speculates that this modification may be an attempt to align with SEC guidance, although the regulatory agency has not yet commented on the application.

Despite the adjustment, the likelihood of spot Ethereum ETF approval has increased slightly on Polymarket, an on-chain prediction protocol. As of May 10, approval odds had nearly doubled to 14%. Nevertheless, expectations for approval remain tempered due to the SEC's historically cautious approach towards Ethereum ETF applications.

Conclusion

The current market downturn has cast a shadow over Ethereum, with analysts predicting further declines. The cryptocurrency's weakened fundamentals, coupled with reduced network activity and regulatory uncertainty, raise concerns about its long-term trajectory. Should Ethereum's price fall to the $2500 level, it could trigger a broader market sell-off, further exacerbating the current bearish sentiment in the cryptocurrency market. Investors are advised to exercise caution and closely monitor market developments to minimize potential losses.
