Ethereum Network Activity Slumps to Half-Year Low Amid Layer 2 Solutions Surge
May 12, 2024 at 03:09 am
Ethereum's network activity has plummeted, reaching a six-month low as Layer 2 solutions gain traction. The blockchain's daily transactions, active addresses, and revenue have all declined. Despite a drop in gas fees, this decrease in activity aligns with Vitalik Buterin's roadmap to enhance scalability by offloading transactions from the mainnet.

Ethereum's Network Activity Plummets to Six-Month Low as Layer 2 Solutions Gain Ground
Ethereum, the second-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, has witnessed a significant decline in its network activity, reaching a six-month low. This downward trend coincides with the growing popularity of Layer 2 (L2) solutions, which offer faster and cheaper transactions offloaded from the Ethereum mainnet.
According to data from blockchain analytics firm IntoTheBlock, Ethereum's transaction fees have hit their lowest point in the past six months, with a 29% decrease in the past week alone. This decline is attributed to the migration of activity to over 50 active L2 networks, including Polygon, Arbitrum, and Optimism.
The drop in Ethereum's on-chain activity is further evidenced by the decrease number of Daily Active Addresses on the network. This metric, which measures the number of unique addresses participating in transactions, has also declined over the past week.
The decrease network activity has had a cascading effect, leading to a drop in Ethereum's transaction revenue. Despite the recent decrease in gas fees, which are paid to miners for processing transactions, the overall revenue generated by the network has declined. This unexpected drop in utilization despite reduced gas fees suggests a shift in market dynamics.
Ethereum's price has also taken a bearish turn, losing over 6% in the past seven days. At the time of writing, ETH was trading at $2,920.99, with a market capitalization of over $350 billion.
Data from on-chain analytics platform Glassnode reveals a possible reason for this price decline. The number of addresses holding more than $100,000 worth of ETH has decreased over the past week, indicating that whales are selling their holdings.
Market sentiment has also been bearish, with the Sentiment Alternate Influx spike twice last week. This indicator measures the number of ETH being sent to exchanges, often signifying selling pressure. Additionally, the Supply on Exchanges has increased, suggesting a potential sell-off.
Technical analysis of Ethereum's daily chart shows bearish indicators. The Relative Energy Index (RSI) is below the neutral mark, and the Money Flow Index (MFI) has registered a downtick. At press time, ETH was trading below its 20-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA), further indicating a possible price decline.
The lower Bollinger Band, which acts as a support level, has also been touched, potentially setting the stage for a trend reversal.
While the rise of L2 solutions has addressed scalability issues on Ethereum, it has also led to a decrease in activity on the mainnet. The price decline and bearish market sentiment suggest that Ethereum faces challenges as it navigates the evolving landscape of blockchain technology.
