Ethereum ETF Approval in Limbo, Crypto Analyst Warns

May 04, 2024 at 03:55 am

Cryptocurrency analyst Michaël van de Poppe cautions Ethereum (ETH) traders that SEC approval for an ETH ETF is improbable in May. Van de Poppe suggests that August remains a possibility for approval, which could boost ETH performance. He advises traders to seize the opportunity presented by market volatility and consider investing in newer altcoins rather than established ones, given the underperformance of Polygon (MATIC) and the potential for higher returns from emerging tokens. Van de Poppe attributes the current Bitcoin (BTC) rally and altcoin bull run to recent FOMC data indicating economic weakness, favoring risk-on assets.

Ethereum ETF Approval Uncertain, Crypto Analyst Warns Traders

In a recent market analysis, prominent crypto trader Michaël van de Poppe has cautioned Ethereum (ETH) traders against expecting a swift approval of an ETH exchange-traded fund (ETF) by the U.S. Securities and Exchanges Commission (SEC).

Van de Poppe, who commands a large following of over 715,000 on the social media platform X, believes that traders may have to exercise patience before an ETH ETF materializes. "The Ethereum ETF is likely not going to be approved in May," he told his followers.

However, Van de Poppe highlights a potential opportunity for investors while the markets remain undervalued in anticipation of an August approval. "The markets are undervaluing a potential approval in August, as Ethereum is still getting sold off," he noted. "I think the chances of an approval in August are positive, through which I expect Ethereum to outperform."

Amidst the current market volatility, Van de Poppe sees a window of opportunity for crypto investors. "You wanted to buy Bitcoin at under $60,000," he said. "You wanted to buy Chainlink at under $15. You wanted to buy any altcoin in a correction. However, now, emotions kicked in and sentiment expects another drop, while the opportunity is here."

Van de Poppe expresses a preference for trading newer altcoins over established ones. "Old coins continue to provide bad returns as Polygon (MATIC) is on a cycle low," he stated. "It's in the area of interest, but you should wonder whether it is going to generate a lot of returns or whether a new coin is going to yield higher upward returns. To me, I stick to new coins."

MATIC has experienced a decline of 20% over the past month.

Van de Poppe also attributes the recent rally in Bitcoin (BTC) and a broader altcoin bull run to the latest Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) data. "Terrible economic data -> DXY (US dollar index) down, additionally the case for quarterly earnings and rate cuts will increase and therefore risk-on assets rally," he explained. "Bitcoin back to $61,600. FOMC was the low for the markets and the altcoin bull market has started."

At the time of writing, BTC was valued at $61,702, marking a 4% increase on the day.

Van de Poppe's analysis emphasizes the importance of managing expectations regarding the timeline of an ETH ETF approval while acknowledging the potential for market opportunities in the current climate. Traders are advised to exercise due diligence and make informed decisions based on the latest market insights and data.
