Ethereum ETF Approval Doubt Casts Shadow as SEC Stays Silent
Apr 11, 2024 at 10:07 am
Despite market uncertainty following a crypto correction, Ethereum is poised for growth due to the upcoming Bitcoin halving and potential spot ETH approval. However, Van Eck's CEO suggests a lower probability of ETF approval in May due to SEC inactivity. Meanwhile, low transaction fees and restaking momentum through EigenLayer's launch on Ethereum Mainnet contribute to the market's optimistic outlook.

Ethereum Price Outlook: SEC Silence Casts Doubt on ETF Approval
Jan Van Eck, CEO of investment firm Van Eck, has expressed pessimism regarding the imminent approval of spot Ethereum (ETH) exchange-traded funds (ETFs) by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), citing the regulatory body's prolonged silence on the matter.
As the May 23 deadline for a decision on Van Eck's spot Ethereum ETF filing approaches, the lack of communication from the SEC has raised concerns within the industry. Unlike the SEC's active engagement and commentary on Bitcoin ETF applications prior to their approval in January, it has refrained from commenting on Ethereum ETF filings, leading analysts like Bloomberg's Eric Balchunas and James Seyffart to lower their expectations of approval in May to 25%.
Grayscale's chief legal officer, Craig Salm, however, has maintained that the SEC's silence does not necessarily undermine Ethereum's chances of approval.
Meanwhile, the cryptocurrency market has undergone a broader correction following a rally that saw ETH reach $3,730. The correction has brought ETH back to its previous consolidation range formed in March, with market dynamics contributing to the shift.
Reduced Transaction Costs via Layer 2s and Solana
According to Van Eck, the most significant development in the cryptocurrency space that often goes unnoticed is the reduction in transaction costs facilitated by Layer 2 solutions and the Solana network. These networks offer scalability, fostering adoption and ensuring predictable costs. Ethereum Layer 2s have benefited from low fees since the Dencun upgrade on March 13.
EigenLayer's Mainnet Launch and Reststaking Boom
In a significant development for Ethereum, EigenLayer, a restaking protocol, went live on the Ethereum Mainnet on Tuesday, having accumulated $13.56 billion in total value locked (TVL) since its launch. This launch is anticipated to drive increased restaking activity on Ethereum, adding to the boom in liquid restaking tokens already gaining traction on its blockchain. EigenLayer has also introduced the EigenDA, an actively validated service that aims to address Ethereum's data availability problems, ushering in an era of cost-effective scalability.
Technical Analysis: Ethereum Price Consolidates, Support at $3,406
Ethereum's price has consolidated on Wednesday after a bearish move that led to a 4% decline in value over the past 24 hours. This consolidation suggests that liquidity is still being collected after the bullish spike on Monday.
While Ethereum's price movement mirrors the general crypto market trend, its long traders have been disproportionately affected by the correction. As per data from Coinglass, ETH long liquidations surpassed $60 million on Wednesday, exceeding Bitcoin long liquidations despite lower volume. This development may lead to increased caution among long traders, potentially allowing bears to gain an advantage.
If the current trend continues, ETH is likely to break below the $3,406 support level. At the time of writing, Ethereum is trading at $3,483.
