Ethereum's Make-or-Break Moment: Can It Regain Its Edge?
Apr 21, 2025 at 11:05 am
Ethereum isn't in crisis, but it's drifting. Once the go-to platform for decentralized innovation, it now finds itself lagging behind newer, faster competitors.

Ethereum isn't in crisis, but it's certainly at a make-or-break moment. Once the go-to platform for decentralized innovation, Ethereum now finds itself lagging behind newer, faster competitors.
Bitcoin has surged past 60% dominance, and ETH is still far from reclaiming its former highs. Meanwhile, Ethereum's share of the overall market has quietly sunk to its lowest in half a decade, as Chainalysis data reveals.
According to David Hoffman of Bankless, Ethereum's current challenges are not a lack of technology, but rather an imbalance in structural priorities and cultural inertia.
Years of prioritizing long-term research and Layer-2 scaling have left its core Layer-1 relatively neglected. Rollups have helped ease congestion and enable new use cases, but they've also fragmented the ecosystem and diluted mainnet activity.
However, according to sources within the Ethereum Foundation, a shift in focus back to the base layer is now underway. Upgrades like Glamsterdam aim to drastically increase gas limits, allowing for a 100x throughput increase without sacrificing decentralization. Zk-based systems are also being explored for further performance enhancements.
But technical changes alone won't solve Ethereum's broader identity problem. Its slow decision-making and lack of clear leadership have fueled internal stagnation.
Critics argue that Ethereum's research-driven environment has often neglected usability and speed—two areas where newer chains have excelled in catering to user needs.
To counter this, Ethereum is adjusting its course. A more product-focused mindset is emerging, with new leadership at the Foundation and shorter development roadmaps being planned.
Interoperability between Layer-1 and Layer-2 is being streamlined, and initiatives like the Pectra upgrade aim to improve user experience, cut costs, and re-energize the ecosystem with new DeFi protocols and dapps.
Ethereum still holds massive potential, but only if it can evolve with the times. The next year may decide whether it regains its edge or continues to slip in a rapidly shifting landscape.
