Ether's surge follows speculation regarding potential US exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for the token, continuing its impressive 62% year-to-date gain. Despite the SEC's reluctance to approve Bitcoin ETFs, the success of these products has sparked hopes for similar approval for Ether ETFs, with investment giants like BlackRock and Fidelity showing interest. However, the SEC's skepticism towards tokens as unregistered securities and the weak correlation between Ether spot and futures prices could pose challenges for Ether ETF approval.

Ether Skyrockets on Anticipation of US ETF Approval
In a remarkable surge that has outshone its rival Bitcoin, Ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency, has propelled forward with an impressive jump, its largest in over a month. This upward trajectory has been fueled by mounting speculation and anticipation surrounding the potential approval of US exchange-traded funds (ETFs) for the digital asset.
As of Tuesday morning in Singapore, Ether was trading at approximately $3,710, buoyed by an 8.5% rally from US trading hours. Its year-to-date gains have reached an impressive 62%, inching closer to Bitcoin's 68% increase.
"There have been whispers of Ether ETF issuers engaging in discussions with the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)," remarked Edward Chin, co-founder of digital-asset hedge fund Parataxis Capital.
The SEC, known for its skepticism towards digital assets, reluctantly approved US spot-Bitcoin ETFs in January, a decision influenced by a court reversal the previous year. The launch of these products has been met with resounding success, amassing a staggering $59 billion in assets since their inception, marking one of the most auspicious debuts in the history of fund categories. This surge contributed significantly to Bitcoin's ascent to a record high in mid-March.
The possibility of Ether ETFs, which would directly hold the token, has ignited excitement among traders who anticipate a further rally if approved by the SEC. Investment giants BlackRock Inc. and Fidelity Investments have submitted applications to launch such funds, but the regulatory landscape remains uncertain.
While Bitcoin has been acknowledged as a commodity by the SEC, the agency contends that most other tokens, including Ether, fall under the classification of unregistered securities. This stance implies that the digital asset sector is rife with non-compliance. Explicit designation of Ether as an unregistered security would pose significant obstacles to the rollout of ETFs.
The approval of spot-Bitcoin portfolios by the SEC was contingent on the strong correlation between CME Bitcoin futures and the price movements of Bitcoin itself, a factor deemed sufficient to deter fraud and manipulation.
However, Bloomberg Intelligence ETF analysts James Seyffart and Eric Balchunas, in a late-March note, assigned a 75% probability to the SEC rejecting Ether ETF applications by May. They reasoned that the SEC may rely on data "showing relatively weak correlations between spot and futures markets."
The SEC has not yet responded to a request for comment regarding any discussions between the agency and potential issuers over Ether ETF applications. This request was made outside of regular business hours.
Despite the uncertain regulatory outlook, the anticipation of Ether ETFs has fueled a surge in optimism within the cryptocurrency community. Traders are eagerly awaiting the SEC's decision, hopeful that the path will be cleared for the introduction of Ether ETFs, potentially unlocking a new wave of investment and propelling Ether to even greater heights.
