Elon Musk and crypto: A complicated relationship

Jul 30, 2024 at 04:06 am

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, spoke about cryptocurrencies during a recent appearance on the X Takeover podcast.

Elon Musk and crypto: A complicated relationship

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, recently discussed cryptocurrencies on the X Takeover podcast. Despite expressing some fondness for cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Elon clarified that he has no intention of actively promoting them.

“I’m not going to be shilling crypto. At best, I’m like joking about it.”

Elon's statement caught the attention of Dogecoin fans, as he is known for his open support of the meme-based cryptocurrency. He mentioned,

“I can’t help but have a soft spot for Dogecoin because I like dogs and I like memes.”

Elon and crypto: A love-hate relationshipElon's relationship with Bitcoin has been complex. In 2021, Tesla announced a $1.5 billion investment in Bitcoin and briefly accepted it as payment for vehicles.

This initially boosted Bitcoin's credibility and value. However, Tesla later discontinued Bitcoin payments due to environmental concerns regarding the energy-intensive crypto mining process, although the company still holds Bitcoin in its reserves.

Elon's statements on Bitcoin have significantly impacted the market, driving both surges and declines in its value. In the podcast, however, he downplayed his influence, stating that if anyone observes him promoting crypto, it's either a joke or not actually him.

Dogecoin has remained Elon's favorite cryptocurrency. He has called it “the people’s crypto,” appreciating its fun and meme-like nature.

While he hasn't been actively posting about Dogecoin recently, his companies Tesla and SpaceX continue to accept it for merchandise.

Additionally, he plans to launch the lunar mission DOGE-1. He has repeatedly advised against investing heavily in crypto, cautioning people against putting their life savings into these volatile assets.

Elon's statements and tweets are known to influence cryptocurrency prices, particularly Dogecoin. His involvement has drawn both fans and critics.

While some credit him for highlighting cryptocurrencies, others blame him for the market volatility caused by his actions.

There have also been rumors of Elon integrating cryptocurrency payments into Twitter. However, no concrete plans have been announced.
