Election 2024

Jun 08, 2024 at 08:00 am

Get the latest news on the 2024 election from our reporters on the campaign trail and in Washington.

Election 2024

The 2024 presidential election is heating up, with President Biden and former President Trump securing their parties' nominations. Here's a look at the latest news from our reporters on the campaign trail and in Washington.

Who is running?

After months of speculation and anticipation, the field of candidates for the 2024 presidential election is finally taking shape. On the Democratic side, President Biden has announced his intention to seek a second term in office. He will face a primary challenge from Marianne Williamson, a self-help author and activist who also ran for president in 2020. On the Republican side, former President Trump is the heavy favorite to win the nomination again. He will face challenges from several candidates, including Nikki Haley, the former governor of South Carolina; Vivek Ramaswamy, a businessman and author; and Bruce Levenson, a former NBA team owner.

The presidential debates

Biden and Trump have agreed to participate in two presidential debates, which will be held on June 27 and Sept. 10. The June 27 debate will be hosted by CNN and held at the George Washington University Lisner Auditorium in Washington, D.C. The Sept. 10 debate will be hosted by ABC News and held at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Both debates will begin at 9 p.m. ET and will last for 90 minutes.

Key dates and events

The 2024 presidential election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5. However, the process of selecting the candidates and casting ballots will begin much earlier in the year. Here are some key dates and events to keep in mind:

* January: Voters in Iowa will hold the first-in-the-nation caucuses to select their party's presidential nominee.

* February: Voters in New Hampshire will hold the first primary election to select their party's presidential nominee.

* March: Voters in several states, including Florida, Illinois, and Ohio, will hold primaries to select their party's presidential nominee.

* April: Voters in several states, including Pennsylvania and New York, will hold primaries to select their party's presidential nominee.

* May: Voters in several states, including Indiana and North Carolina, will hold primaries to select their party's presidential nominee.

* June: The Republican and Democratic National Conventions will be held to formally nominate their presidential candidates.

* November: The general election will be held to elect the president of the United States.

Abortion and the election

The 2024 presidential election is shaping up to be a pivotal year for abortion rights. Voters in about a dozen states could decide the fate of abortion rights with constitutional amendments on the ballot.

Biden has consistently supported legal access to abortion and has encouraged Congress to pass a law that would codify abortion rights nationwide. After months of mixed signals about his position, Trump has said the issue should be left to states.

Here's a look at how Biden's and Trump's abortion stances have shifted over the years.
