EigenLayer Withdrawals Spike After Airdrop Disappointment

May 01, 2024 at 04:14 pm

EigenLayer, the largest Ethereum restaking protocol, has experienced a surge in withdrawal requests, with over 12,412 withdrawals recorded in the past three days since the announcement of its planned EIGEN airdrop. The mass withdrawals, which began on April 29th, are attributed to widespread disappointment surrounding the exclusion of several key jurisdictions, including the United States, Canada, and several African and Asian countries.

EigenLayer Withdrawals Surge Amid Airdrop Disappointment

EigenLayer, a prominent Ethereum restaking protocol, has witnessed a significant surge in withdrawal requests, exceeding 12,412, following widespread dissatisfaction with its planned EIGEN airdrop distribution.

The exodus of depositors commenced on April 29, with over 4,336 daily withdrawals recorded, according to data from the analytics platform Dune. The following day, the withdrawal count escalated to 6,496.

EigenLayer's airdrop announcement, outlined in a white paper, excluded several jurisdictions, including the United States, Canada, and various African and Asian nations. This restriction elicited considerable disappointment among participants, prompting the mass withdrawals.

Dune data indicates that EigenLayer boasts a user base of over 107,000 unique depositors. The recent withdrawals, totaling 12,412, represent approximately 11.6% of this user base opting to withdraw their assets.

While the magnitude of individual withdrawals remains undetermined, the 11.6% withdrawal queue could potentially reduce EigenLayer's current total value locked (TVL), currently valued at $14.8 billion, to just above $13 billion.

The impact of the mass withdrawals on EigenLayer's TVL is expected to become more apparent in the subsequent weeks, as the protocol maintains a seven-day withdrawal processing period.

Anndy Lian, an intergovernmental blockchain expert and author, believes the airdrop exclusion has fostered widespread disappointment, which will ultimately impact the protocol's TVL.

"Participants from these excluded regions may have contributed significantly to EigenLayer's TVL," Lian stated. "Their exclusion could lead to a decline in the overall TVL, particularly if they were actively restaking their assets."

Airdrop farming, a practice where investors participate in protocols primarily for the purpose of receiving airdrop distributions, has shifted its focus towards alternative restaking protocols following the EigenLayer airdrop debacle.

Karak, a recently launched restaking protocol, has emerged as a potential beneficiary, experiencing a 20.5% increase in its TVL to $439 million, making it the second-largest restaking protocol on Ethereum, according to DefiLlama.

Lian attributes Karak's rapid growth not only to the dissatisfaction surrounding EigenLayer's airdrop, but also to its technical advantages and flexible restaking token offerings.

"Karak incorporates innovative technical features, including multi-asset restaking and a plug-and-play development environment," Lian explained. "These features may provide Karak with an edge in attracting developers and users seeking a more versatile restaking platform."

As the restaking landscape continues to evolve, EigenLayer's recent withdrawal surge and the rise of alternative protocols highlight the dynamic and competitive nature of the market. Investors are advised to carefully consider the risks and potential rewards associated with participating in airdrop distributions and restaking protocols.
