3 Eco-Friendly Cryptocurrencies That Won't Hurt the Environment

Cryptocurrencies, especially Bitcoin, have come under fire for their large carbon footprint. However, these claims are often exaggerated, and some cryptocurrencies are not only energy-efficient but also environmentally friendly.

If you're looking to invest in greener alternatives, here are three cryptocurrencies to consider:

1. Algorand (ALGO)

Announced itself as a carbon-negative blockchain on Earth Day 2022, blacking out nearly 20 green billboards it had purchased in Times Square. Even before this announcement, Algorand had a very small carbon footprint due to its use of the proof-of-stake model to validate transactions.

Algorand became carbon-negative by launching a smart contract that offsets each transaction's carbon footprint without any action on the user's part. It also uses a portion of its network fees to purchase carbon credits through ClimateTrade.

As of now, ALGO is trading at $0.1371. Moving averages suggest a strong sell. The trend is bearish, with the present price below the 200-day Exponential Moving Average (EMA).

2. Solana (SOL)

Solana is well-known for its speed and efficiency. It regularly processes over 2,000 transactions per second and has been reported to handle up to 65,000. The average transaction fee is just $0.00025.

Like many other green cryptocurrencies, Solana utilizes Proof-of-History (PoH), a variation of the Proof-of-Stake model. This enables quicker validations without大量 energy use. The proof system is chronological, ensuring transaction sequence without the back-and-forth typical of other ecosystems.

Solana's hybrid protocol contributes to its impressive processing speed. One SOL transaction uses around 719 kilojoules (kJ), which is less than the energy needed to perform a Google search. Its price is set to surge amid ETF hype.

3. Cardano (ADA)

Cardano is another well-known eco-friendly cryptocurrency. It offers a programmable ecosystem that can be used to create solutions for real-world problems. For instance, Ethiopian state schools now store their students' records on the Cardano blockchain.

The ecosystem selects validators based on the amount of ADA they've staked, which dramatically reduces energy use without compromising decentralization or security. In fact, Cardano is 47,200x more energy efficient than Bitcoin. Additionally, the Cardano Foundation has completed a restoration initiative that involved planting over one million trees.

Currently, ADA is in a bearish trend and trades at $0.391. This cryptocurrency is a strong sell, trading below the 200-day EMA and just $0.05 away from the death cross.
