Dogecoin Is No Longer the Top Dog, and Its Best Days Are Behind It
Jul 07, 2024 at 09:02 pm
In the crypto market, there's arguably no more polarizing topic than meme coins. Quite simply, you either love them or hate them.

Meme coins have taken the crypto market by storm, with some, like Dogecoin, amassing multibillion-dollar market caps. But is Dogecoin still a wise investment in 2024? Here's what you need to know.
What happened
Dogecoin, the original dog-themed meme coin, has been around since 2013. At one point, it was the clear leader in the meme coin space, but that title now belongs to Shiba Inu. With the rise of Shiba Inu and other meme coins, Dogecoin is no longer the hot new crypto on the block.
So what's the big deal?
If you're looking at meme coins as a way to get rich quick, you might be tempted to choose the meme coin with the best recent performance. But it's important to remember that meme coins are highly speculative and can lose value just as quickly as they gain it.
If you're a serious investor, you probably won't want to touch meme coins, and for good reason. They're inherently risky and don't serve a clear purpose in the crypto market. But if you're dead set on investing in meme coins, you might want to consider Dogecoin over its competitors.
Here's the thing: Meme coins like Shiba Inu, Pepe, and dogwifhat have soared in value this year, easily outpacing Dogecoin. But if you're looking at the top dog meme coins, there isn't much difference in market caps. Shiba Inu has a market cap of $7.3 billion, Pepe has a market cap of $2.3 billion, and dogwifhat has a market cap of $2.1 billion.
Now compare that to Dogecoin, which has a market cap of $17.2 billion. If you're going to invest in a meme coin, you'll want to choose one that has the potential to generate a meaningful return on your investment. And while Pepe and dogwifhat have certainly outperformed Dogecoin this year, there's no guarantee that will continue.
If you're willing to take on a huge amount of risk for the potential to multiply your money, you might get better results by investing in a meme coin that's performed well in 2024, rather than one that's peaked in the past. But again, this is a risky strategy and not recommended for the faint of heart.
