Digital Asset Outflows Surge as Bitcoin's Decline Bites

Apr 16, 2024 at 01:58 am

Digital asset investment products witnessed a setback, registering outflows of $126 million last week. Bitcoin experienced significant outflows, contributing to 87% of the total net flow. The decline is attributed to investors' cautious approach following the market's loss of price momentum, as explained by CoinShares' Head of Research, James Butterfill.

Digital Asset Outflows Surge as Bitcoin's Decline Bites

Digital Asset Outflows Rise Amidst Market Turbulence and Bitcoin's Decline

Digital asset investment products have experienced a significant setback in the past week, with outflows reaching $126 million, according to CoinShares' latest weekly report. This negative sentiment has been primarily driven by Bitcoin's outflow, which accounted for a staggering 87% of the total net flow.

Bitcoin Woes Drive Outflows

Bitcoin's outflow has been attributed to investors' cautious stance following the tapering of price momentum in the market. James Butterfill, Head of Research at CoinShares, believes that this trend reflects investors' uncertainty about the future direction of Bitcoin's price.

ETF/ETP Activity Slumps

The report also indicates a decline in ETF/ETP trading activity compared to the broader market. Total volume reached only 31% last week, despite a slight week-on-week increase from $17 billion to $21 billion. This suggests that investors are refraining from making substantial trades in the face of market volatility.

Bitcoin Investment Products Hit Hard

Several major Bitcoin investment products, including Grayscale GBTC, ProShares BITO, and Purpose ETF, were primarily responsible for the outflows. Their cumulative flows nearly reached $1 billion, overshadowing the inflows seen in BlackRock IBIT, Fidelity FBTC, and Ark 21Shares ARKB.

Regionally Dispersed Outflows

The outflows were regionally dispersed, with the US experiencing the largest outflows at $145 million. Switzerland and Canada followed with outflows of $5.7 million and $6 million, respectively. Germany, on the other hand, saw recent price weakness as an opportunity, recording inflows of $29 million.

Ethereum Outflows Continue

Ethereum continued its negative trajectory with a fifth consecutive week of outflows totaling $28.7 million. Its month-to-date flow now stands at negative $51.3 million, while its year-to-date flow has reached only $23 million. This suggests a potential erosion of its gains for the year.

Other Altcoins See Mixed Flows

Other altcoins experienced mixed flows. Solana saw outflows of $3.6 million, while multi-asset products recorded $5.6 million in outflows. Notably, Short Bitcoin saw a reversal in trend with $1.7 million in inflows after three consecutive weeks of outflows, indicating a resurgence of bearish sentiment.

Bright Spots Amidst Negative Tide

Despite the overall negative sentiment, several altcoins witnessed positive flows. Litecoin, XRP, and Polkadot attracted inflows of $1.6 million, $300,000, and $800,000, respectively. Lesser-known altcoins like Decentraland, Basic Attention Token, and LIDO also saw inflows of $4.9 million, $2.9 million, and $1.8 million, respectively.

Conclusion

The recent outflows in digital asset investment products reflect investors' cautious approach amidst market volatility and Bitcoin's decline. While Bitcoin continues to face headwinds, other altcoins are showing resilience and attracting inflows. As the market continues to evolve, investors will need to closely monitor these trends and make informed decisions about their digital asset investments.
