DePin: The New Tech Landscape of Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks
Jun 11, 2024 at 02:22 am
Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePin) are transforming the tech landscape by enabling decentralized projects in real-world infrastructure. Here's what happened recently in the DePin sector: io.net's CEO stepped down just before their token launch, Helium Mobile reached over 92,000 subscribers, and the number of active decentralized physical infrastructure projects grew to more than 1,200.

io.net’s CEO Stepped Down Solona-based decentralized infrastructure provider io.net, which allows users to sell their GPU power to others, recently changed its CEO just two days before the launch of its native token on Binance Launchpad.
The token launch, set for Tuesday, June 11, is part of io.net’s grand plan to become the world’s largest AI computing network. Co-founder Ahmad Shadid stepped down from his role immediately, and Tory Green, his fellow co-founder and former COO, took over as his successor.
In an attempt to quell any speculation surrounding his departure, Shadid provided an explanation for his decision. He highlighted the company’s continued dedication to growth and success, presenting his departure as a move that aligns with this vision.
“While there have been some allegations regarding my past, I want to clarify that I am stepping down as CEO to allow io.net to move forward without any distractions and to help the team achieve its goals,” Shadid said.
Io.net aggregates GPU resources to create a network that offers affordable computing power to machine learning startups, slashing costs compared to traditional cloud services. However, io.net has faced significant criticism.
Commentators have argued that io.net misled the community about its GPU capabilities and questioned why it sets prices instead of allowing compute owners to do so. Moreover, a GPU metadata attack on April 28 caused active GPU connections to drop from 600,000 to 10,000, heightening concerns about the network’s reliability and transparency.
Helium Mobile Surpassed 92,000 Subscribers Helium Mobile now has over 92,000 subscribers, showcasing the increasing demand for decentralized wireless networks.
Helium’s model utilizes blockchain technology to incentivize users for setting up and maintaining wireless coverage, which has garnered a vast community and expanded its network.
Each time a new subscriber joins, an NFT is minted and added to the decentralized network. Users can also earn MOBILE tokens by undertaking tasks such as “Discovery Mapping,” where they share their location to enhance coverage. These tokens can be used to pay for their phone plans or traded for other cryptocurrencies.
Helium Mobile offers a $20 per month plan for unlimited talk, text, and data. It combines the Helium network with T-Mobile’s infrastructure to provide coverage. This strategy, coupled with strong community support, demonstrates the success of decentralized models in the telecommunications industry.
Active DePin Projects Crossed 1,200 According to the DePin Ninja dashboard, the DePin ecosystem is thriving, with 1,215 active projects currently engaged, a total market cap of $47 billion, and an annual revenue run rate of $15 million.
The projects span decentralized wireless networks to community-driven energy grids, highlighting the diverse applications of DePin technologies. The top five by market cap include Fetch.ai ($4.3 billion), Render ($3.56 billion), Filecoin ($3.3 billion), The Graph ($2.5 billion), and Arweave ($2.5 billion).
These developments indicate a promising outlook for DePin, with increasing user engagement and a growing number of active projects paving the way for decentralized solutions across various infrastructure sectors. Though DePin is still in its early stages and has several kinks to work out, it enables the exchange of tokens between synthetic and real-world assets, complementing traditional infrastructure by providing last-mile coverage in areas where conventional models are not economically viable.
