A day after King Charles and other senior royals paid tributes to war heroes during the commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, a World War II veteran said he was honored with a special gift from Prince Harry.

Private Joseph Hammond was honored by King Charles's youngest son with a special gift ahead of his 100th birthday.

A day after King Charles and other senior royals paid tributes to war heroes during the commemorations marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe (VE) Day, a World War II veteran said he was honored with a special gift from Prince Harry.

Private Joseph Hammond was honored by King Charles's youngest son with a special gift ahead of his 100th birthday.

Hammond revealed in a social media post on 7 May that he received an Invictus Games medal coin from the Duke of Sussex.

"It was a great honour to welcome the @WeAreInvictus team to Ghana, just ahead of my birthday this Saturday!" Hammond wrote.

Hammond gifted Prince Harry with a copy of his memoir, "in recognition of his unwavering commitment to veterans' welfare."

On May 5, King Charles was pictured speaking to Second World War veteran Joe Mines at a tea party in Buckingham Palace in following the military procession to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

The British royal family hosted about 50 veterans and others who lived through the war for a tea party inside the palace.

The government had planned a series of events in the run-up to the anniversary of Nazi Germany's unconditional surrender that took effect on May 8, 1945.
