The Dawn of a New Era for XRP

Mar 21, 2025 at 04:35 am

The cryptocurrency market has witnessed a seismic shift with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) dramatic decision to withdraw its appeal in the protracted legal battle with Ripple Labs.

The Dawn of a New Era for XRP

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has pulled out of its appeal against a lower court ruling that its case over cryptocurrency XRP can proceed, according to a Monday report by Law360.

The development marks the latest chapter in a lawsuit that began in December 2020, when the SEC sued Ripple and two former executives, alleging they raised $7.14bn through an unregistered securities offering.

The regulator claimed that XRP was sold to the public as an investment contract, a type of security that must be registered with the SEC.

However, Judge Analisa Torres ruled in July that the SEC failed to sufficiently demonstrate that XRP was sold as a security in direct sales to institutional investors.

The SEC's setback comes amid broader efforts by the agency to expand its oversight of the cryptocurrency industry.

Earlier this year, the SEC sued major cryptocurrency exchange Binance for allegedly violating securities laws and illegally selling tokens to U.S. investors.

The agency also sued crypto exchange Coinbase for allegedly operating as an unregistered exchange and selling unregistered securities.

In response to the setbacks, both Binance and Coinbase have moved to dismiss the lawsuits.

The SEC's case against Ripple has been closely watched by the cryptocurrency industry, which is seeking more clarity on which tokens are subject to U.S. securities laws.

The case could have implications for the future of cryptocurrency regulation in the U.S.

According to crypto analytics firm Messari, XRP's price has surged more than 200% in 2023.

The token's price has soared in recent days, and it broke above the $0.7 mark on Monday, August 7, for the first time since May 2022.

The gains come amid broader strength in the cryptocurrency market, with Bitcoin and Ethereum also trading in the green.

Bitcoin has risen above the $70,000 level for the first time since early 2022.

According to CoinGecko, XRP's price has soared by 766% since the beginning of 2023.

The token's price is up over 1300% from its lows in November 2022, when it fell below the $0.3 mark.

According to crypto analytics firm Santiment, whale activity in XRP has increased in recent months.

Whales are large investors who can move market prices with their trades.

Santiment noted that "a lack of SEC news" and "consistent whale activity" could be bullish signals for XRP in the short term.

According to data from CryptoQuant, XRP's network activity has also increased significantly in 2023.

Network activity is a measure of the total number of transactions and users on a cryptocurrency network.

According to Elliott Wave analysis by ChartPro, XRP is currently in the third wave of a five-wave structure, which could take the token to price levels of $3.94.

If XRP breaks above the fourth wave, which is located at $2.7, then the fifth wave could reach price levels of $6.

The analysis also suggests that XRP could test the Fib 0.618 at $0.9 if it fails to break above the third wave.

According to Benzinga, the SEC's decision to withdraw its appeal and the subsequent market reactions could open a new chapter for XRP.

The cryptocurrency could see increased adoption and renewed confidence from investors as a result of the legal clarity provided by the court ruling.
