Crypto Trends in 2024 Reflected Breakthroughs, Controversies, and Game-Changing Events
Dec 31, 2024 at 07:35 pm
From Bitcoin's historic $100K milestone to the rise of AI in Web3, this year has delivered transformative moments for the industry.

2024 was a year of great change in the crypto world. From the SEC approving Bitcoin spot ETFs to Bitcoin finally reaching the $100K milestone, there were many moments that shaped the year in crypto. Here is a recap of some of the biggest crypto stories of 2024.
The SEC Approves Bitcoin Spot ETFs
In January 2024, the SEC finally approved Bitcoin spot ETFs, opening the door for greater institutional adoption of crypto. After years of being rejected, major players like BlackRock and Fidelity launched regulated ETFs, giving traditional investors a safe and easy way to gain exposure to Bitcoin.
The launch of these ETFs was met with great enthusiasm, and within the first year, they had already accumulated over 1.1 million BTC, with total net assets reaching an impressive $106.24 billion before their first anniversary.
Mysterious $1.2M Sent to Satoshi Nakamoto’s Wallet
Another surprising event occurred in January when an unidentified individual sent 26.9 Bitcoin, valued at approximately $1.19 million at the time, to Bitcoin’s Genesis wallet - the first-ever address created by Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto.
This mysterious transaction sent shockwaves through Crypto Twitter, with many speculating whether Satoshi had returned or if the coins were being burned.
“Either Satoshi woke up, bought 27 bitcoin from Binance, and deposited it into their wallet, or someone just burned a million dollars,” Coinbase’s Conor Grogan said.
Sam Bankman-Fried Sentenced to 25 Years
In March 2024, Sam Bankman-Fried, the founder of the failed FTX exchange, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for his role in the company’s collapse. In addition to jail time, Bankman-Fried was also ordered to pay $11 billion in restitution.
Bitcoin's 4th Halving Sparks Market Movement
April brought Bitcoin's fourth halving, reducing miner rewards from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC per block. This halving introduced a supply shock, which is historically linked to price rallies. The impact of the halving on the market was evident as Bitcoin continued to surge throughout the year, eventually crossing the $100K milestone.
AI Agents Redefine Web3
2024 also saw the rapid rise of AI agents in the Web3 space. These autonomous AI agents were now fully capable of managing smart contracts, optimizing dApps, and operating decentralized organizations.
One notable example is Terminal of Truths (ToT), an AI agent created by Andy Ayrey in May 2024. To provide context, Marc Andreessen funded ToT with a $50,000 grant in July to enhance its model.
By October, ToT had launched and endorsed the GOAT meme coin, which quickly soared in value. As a result of this effort, ToT became the first AI millionaire, receiving a substantial allocation of GOAT tokens.
Pro-Bitcoin President Trump Re-Elected
In the November U.S. presidential election, Donald Trump won re-election, with his pro-Bitcoin stance playing a key role in his victory. Trump's promises to support crypto innovation and establish clear regulatory guidelines instilled optimism among blockchain businesses and investors.
If Trump fulfills these promises, the U.S. could re-establish itself as a global hub for blockchain innovation, making the country more attractive to crypto businesses and investors.
XRP Surges Amid Regulatory Resolution
XRP experienced a remarkable surge in November-December, hitting a seven-year high of over $2.8 before retracting to around $2. The rally was particularly significant in light of XRP's struggles over the past years due to the ongoing regulatory uncertainty with the SEC.
With clearer regulations on the horizon and increasing institutional adoption, XRP's future looks promising. Some analysts predict that the token could continue its upward trajectory, potentially reaching $5 or higher in 2025.
Bitcoin Finally Crosses the $100K Mark
In December, Bitcoin reached an extraordinary milestone by crossing the $100K mark for the first time in its history. This price surge was fueled by a combination of factors, including institutional inflows, the scarcity post-halving, and favorable political developments.
The $100K price point triggered a renewed wave of FOMO among institutional investors, propelling Bitcoin further into the mainstream. As analysts speculate on what's next for Bitcoin, all eyes are now on whether the asset can continue to soar in 2025.
