Crypto Slumps Amid Economic Jitters; Bitcoin Faces Headwinds

Apr 30, 2024 at 05:01 am

Over the weekend, the cryptocurrency market remained relatively unchanged, with Bitcoin hovering below $63,000 on Monday. Analysts project a potential market decline due to the absence of positive catalysts, amplified by growing economic concerns. Stocks experienced market volatility, opening on an upward trend before closing in the red after an adjustment to the federal borrowing estimate. Amidst this market uncertainty, Bitcoin faced a dip below $63,600, finding support at $61,750, while altcoins generally faced losses, with Amp (AMP), BinaryX (BNX), and Helium (HNT) being notable exceptions.

Crypto Slumps Amid Economic Jitters; Bitcoin Faces Headwinds

Cryptocurrency Market Falters Amid Economic Uncertainties

Over the weekend, the cryptocurrency market remained lackluster as Bitcoin (BTC) continued to trade below $63,000 on Monday. Analysts anticipate that the absence of positive catalysts could lead to a further downward spiral for the market amidst heightened economic concerns.

Economic Jitters Drive Volatility in Stock Markets

Stock markets experienced a tumultuous trading day on Monday, initially trending higher but succumbing to selling pressure as the session progressed. The major indices slipped into the red near midday, fueled by a $41 billion increase in the U.S. Treasury's federal borrowing estimate for the current quarter to $243 billion.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury surged to 4.65% in response to this development, after declining to 4.613% earlier in the trading day. However, it has since retreated and currently trades at 4.607%. Despite the initial setbacks, the S&P, Dow, and Nasdaq all closed higher, posting gains of 0.32%, 0.38%, and 0.35%, respectively.

Bitcoin Faces Headwinds Amidst Risk Aversion

Data from TradingView reveals that Bitcoin (BTC) breached support at $63,600 early Monday and reached a low of $61,750 in the afternoon, before dip buyers intervened to halt the decline. A subsequent short-lived rally saw Bitcoin briefly climb above $63,200, although it later settled at $63,070 at the time of writing, representing a 0.9% drop on the 24-hour chart.

Economic Data to Drive Market Sentiment

Analysts at Secure Digital Markets observed Bitcoin's current downtrend, characterized by lower highs and lows, indicating bearish momentum. They attributed the price suppression to the uncertainty surrounding future interest rate hikes.

"The combination of sluggish growth and persistent inflation has reduced the likelihood of Fed rate cuts, casting a shadow over risk assets," the analysts explained. They emphasized the need for a rally above $67,500 for bullish dominance to be regained.

ETF Flow Reversal Weighs on Bitcoin

Recent ETF outflows have also weighed on Bitcoin's price, contributing to the weakness in the broader crypto market.

"Bitcoin ETFs experienced significant outflows, totaling $83.6 million last Friday, with Grayscale alone facing $82.4 million in outflows," Secure Digital Markets reported. "Blackrock's lack of inflows for a third consecutive day paints a rather bleak picture."

Upcoming Economic Events to Monitor

Secure Digital Markets highlighted several upcoming events that could impact market sentiment, including corporate earnings reports from PayPal and Amazon on Tuesday, and from Apple, Coinbase, and Block on Thursday.

The Federal Reserve's monetary policy meeting on Wednesday is also drawing attention, although no interest rate changes are anticipated. Investors will be paying close attention to Chair Jerome Powell's remarks at the subsequent press conference.

Friday's release of April's nonfarm payrolls report will provide a crucial indicator of the labor market's health and influence the Fed's policy decisions and overall economic assessment.

Technical Analysis Suggests Potential Upside

According to crypto trader Milkybull Crypto, the recent weakness in Bitcoin could represent "the last shakeout before the rally to cycle top." He drew parallels to the 2017 price action, where a significant pullback preceded a surge to a cycle high.

Milkybull Crypto identified potential liquidity grab zones at $57k-$59k and noted that the STH (short-term holder) cost basis stands at $59,788. He emphasized the importance of monitoring these zones for a final shakeout.

Altcoins Extend Declines

Amidst Bitcoin's weakness, altcoins struggled, with all but ten tokens in the top 200 posting losses on Monday. Amp (AMP) was the notable exception, gaining 18.75%, followed by BinaryX (BNX) with a 6.4% rise and Helium (HNT) with a 5.7% increase.

The overall cryptocurrency market capitalization currently stands at $2.32 trillion, while Bitcoin's dominance rate remains at 53.3%.
