Crypto Scam Crackdown: 8 Years Behind Bars for eEmpowerCoin Mastermind

In the ever-evolving world of cryptocurrency, scams continue to lurk in the shadows. The recent sentencing of Dwayne Golden, the mastermind behind the eEmpowerCoin Ponzi scheme, serves as a stark reminder of the risks involved and the consequences for those who exploit investor enthusiasm.

eEmpowerCoin: A $40 Million Crypto Con

Dwayne Golden, 57, has been sentenced to 97 months in prison for his role in orchestrating scams through three digital asset firms: EmpowerCoin, ECoinPlus, and Jet-Coin. These firms collectively defrauded investors of over $40 million. The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced the conviction, highlighting Golden's guilt on charges of wire fraud and money laundering.

Federal prosecutors revealed that Golden and his partners lured investors with promises of guaranteed returns from crypto trading. However, these trades never materialized. Instead, investor funds were used to pay off earlier investors or to line the pockets of the conspirators. This is a textbook example of a Ponzi scheme.

The Anatomy of the Scam

The eEmpowerCoin scam operated between April and August 2017. Golden, along with Gregory Aggesen and Marquis Egerton, falsely presented their firms as legitimate international crypto traders. United States Attorney Joseph Nocella aptly described the scheme as an exploitation of investor excitement over new technology.

After the collapse of their companies, Golden and his co-defendants attempted to obstruct investigations by the Federal Trade Commission and a federal grand jury. These efforts included destroying evidence and providing false information. Such obstruction tactics only further cemented their guilt and highlighted their disregard for the law.

Justice Served

In addition to the prison sentence, Golden was ordered to forfeit approximately $2.46 million. Co-defendant William White received a 30-month sentence, while Aggesen and Egerton are awaiting sentencing. FBI Assistant Director Christopher Raia called the conspiracy “an elaborate scheme rooted in deceit and false promises to swindle investors.” He emphasized that Golden’s actions showed “an utter disregard for integrity” and praised the sentence as a warning to other would-be scammers.

A Wider Problem: Crypto Scams on the Rise

While Golden's sentencing brings some closure to the victims of the eEmpowerCoin scam, it's essential to recognize that crypto scams remain a significant threat. Earlier this month, five men pleaded guilty to orchestrating a $36.9 million crypto scam that defrauded Americans and funneled funds to a crypto scam center in Cambodia. These scams often target victims through social media, messaging apps, and dating platforms, luring them with false promises of profitable crypto investments.

The statistics are alarming. So far in 2025, over $2.1 billion has been stolen in crypto-related incidents, with most losses tied to wallet compromises and key mismanagement, according to CertiK co-founder Ronghui Gu.

Staying Safe in the Crypto Wild West

The sentencing of Dwayne Golden sends a clear message: crypto scams will not be tolerated. Law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing these criminals and bringing them to justice. However, it's also up to individual investors to remain vigilant and informed. Do your research, be wary of promises that sound too good to be true, and never invest more than you can afford to lose.

So, there you have it, folks! Another scammer bites the dust. Let’s raise a virtual toast to justice and hope that fewer people fall victim to these digital bandits in the future. Stay safe out there in the crypto-verse!
