Ethereum has performed remarkably in the past month and a half, gaining over 70% from the April lows. This parabolic move came after the price reversed sharply and started to recover from the Q1 correction.

In a recent interview, Arthur Hayes, former CEO of BitMEX, highlighted Ethereum (ETH) as a unique investment opportunity, setting an ambitious target of $5,000 for the token.

According to Hayes, the Trump administration might abandon U.S. treasuries as the global reserve asset due to the ongoing macroeconomic trends. With the decline in the value of the dollar, the administration might seek alternative options, and cryptocurrencies could come into play.

Moreover, Hayes believes that capital will naturally gravitate towards the asset class that offers the highest returns. In the current scenario, with interest rates rising, fixed-income assets appear more appealing than equities. However, if the market shifts and cryptocurrencies begin to generate substantial returns, capital will quickly flow in that direction.

“If you look at the U.S. administration, they’ve been able to generate returns of 12% to 15% in crypto over the past 18 months. That kind of return is not possible with U.S. treasuries. So, if they see that kind of return in crypto, they might decide to move away from U.S. treasuries and invest in crypto instead,” Hayes added.

Midway into the ongoing rally, Ethereum launched the Pectra upgrade, significantly increasing the upward momentum by boosting institutional and overall investor confidence. However, the rally has stalled over the past two weeks as Ethereum has been facing considerable rejection near the $2,745 resistance zone.

A breakout from the same resistance level propelled the ETH price to $4,100 in the November 2024 rally. As the market enters the biggest bull season in history, a breakout from this level can send Ethereum into a more prominent surge, potentially surpassing its all-time high and reaching $7,000 this time.
