Crypto Lending, Iris Scanning, and Unsecured Loans: A New Frontier?

Explore the resurgence of unsecured crypto lending, featuring iris scanning for borrower verification and its implications for global finance.

Crypto Lending, Iris Scanning, and Unsecured Loans: A New Frontier?

Crypto Lending, Iris Scanning, and Unsecured Loans: A New Frontier?

The world of crypto lending is evolving, and a fascinating trend is emerging: unsecured loans verified by iris scans. Let's dive into this innovative approach and see what it means for the future of finance.

Eyeing a New Lending Landscape

San Francisco-based Divine Research is making waves by issuing unsecured loans to borrowers worldwide, using iris scans instead of traditional IDs. This method, leveraging World ID (developed by Worldcoin), aims to reach underserved individuals, particularly in developing economies, who often struggle to access traditional credit.

Microfinance on Steroids?

Divine Research, has issued around 30,000 short-term loans since December. The loans, typically under $1,000, are disbursed in USDC. According to Divine founder Diego Estevez, this initiative targets everyday individuals like teachers and vendors, providing them with access to much-needed credit. It's "microfinance on steroids," as Estevez puts it.

The Iris Scan Advantage

Each borrower undergoes an iris scan via a World ID orb to confirm their identity. This system is designed to prevent users from taking out multiple loans under different identities, reducing the risk of default. While default rates on first-time loans are around 40%, fixed interest rates (20%-30%) and reclaimable Worldcoin tokens help mitigate these losses.

A Second Chance for Unsecured Crypto Lending

The rise of Divine coincides with the resurgence of unsecured crypto lending after the 2022 market crash that led to the downfall of major lenders like Celsius and Genesis. While those failures were due to retail-funded platforms being unable to return deposits amidst falling token prices, new players are cautiously entering the field. Platforms like 3Jane, backed by Paradigm, are issuing uncollateralized USDC loans on Ethereum, using proof of bank or crypto assets instead of collateral. They even sell defaulted loans to US debt collectors and are developing AI-powered lending agents to automate debt term enforcement.

The Niche Appeal and Wall Street's Cautious Entry

Although still a niche segment, unsecured loans are gaining attention amid growing investor appetite. Larger players like Coinbase and Tether still dominate collateralized lending. Wall Street is also dipping its toes in, with firms like Cantor Fitzgerald launching bitcoin-backed financing arms. Divine's unique model, combining biometric verification with a focus on small, global borrowers, sets it apart.

My Take: A Risky But Promising Venture

While the idea of unsecured crypto loans verified by iris scans is intriguing, it's not without its risks. The high default rates and the volatile nature of the crypto market remain significant concerns. However, the potential to provide financial access to underserved populations is undeniable. If Divine and similar platforms can refine their risk management strategies and continue to innovate, they could revolutionize microfinance. The 40% default rate cited in the article is a stark reminder of the risks involved, but the high interest rates help mitigate some of the loss.

Looking Ahead

For now, Divine is betting that eye scans, high interest rates, and yield-hungry depositors can make unsecured crypto loans work, even in a market still haunted by its past. Will it succeed? Only time will tell. But one thing is clear: the world of crypto lending is never short on surprises. It's like a financial rollercoaster – buckle up and enjoy the ride!
