Crypto Analyst Benjamin Cowen Offers Nuanced Perspective on Solana's SOL/USD Recent Performance and Potential Future Trajectory

Crypto Analyst Benjamin Cowen Offers Nuanced Perspective on Solana's SOL/USD Recent Performance and Potential Future Trajectory

Renowned crypto analyst Benjamin Cowen has shared his insights on Solana's (CRYPTO: SOL) recent performance and what the future might hold for the altcoin.

Here's a breakdown of what Cowen had to say.

What Happened: In his latest podcast update, Cowen acknowledged that he was correct in predicting that Solana would drop below $10 in 2022. However, he admits that he didn't anticipate Solana's subsequent 500% surge against Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC).

According to Cowen, this can be attributed to his focus on Bitcoin dominance, which he expected to rise from 38% to 60% before altcoins outperformed. Data from Coinmarketcap shows that Bitcoin dominance is currently at 56%.

While Solana has rallied significantly, Cowen noted that it hasn't yet reached new all-time highs against Bitcoin, unlike some other altcoins in previous cycles.

He drew parallels between Solana's current pattern and Ethereum's (CRYPTO: ETH) behavior in past market cycles, suggesting that Solana could follow a similar consolidation and correction path.

"Now, if we look at the way that Solana has performed, you can see that it's rallied quite a bit, but it has yet to reach a new all-time high against BTC, which is something that we did see in the previous cycles from some of the other altcoins. So, keeping that in mind, let's see what happens."

Cowen also emphasized the importance of considering market cap valuations rather than just price, pointing out that Solana's market cap relative to Bitcoin is near its 2021 peak. He speculated that macroeconomic factors, particularly the yield curve inversion, could trigger a pullback in Solana's Bitcoin valuation.

"Solana's market cap relative to BTC is also interesting. It's sitting up here at the highs, which could lead to a decrease in the valuation of Solana relative to BTC, especially if we do get that pivot, that macroeconomic pivot, which is being hinted at by the yield curve inversion."

Why It Matters: Cowen suggested that Solana's performance may depend on broader market dynamics, including Ethereum's potential bottoming against Bitcoin and the Federal Reserve's monetary policy shifts.

He maintains that most altcoins historically act as oscillators against Bitcoin, cautioning that rate cuts could lead to a breakdown in altcoin/Bitcoin pairs.

"If we do get those rate cuts, which everyone's expecting, that could lead to a breakdown in these altcoin/Bitcoin pairs, which is something that we saw forming in the previous cycles. And if that happens, then we'll know that, you know, the performance of most altcoins, which is relative strength against BTC, will have topped out for this particular cycle."

While acknowledging Solana's strong performance, Cowen urges investors to remain aware of potential market shifts and the cyclical nature of altcoin performance relative to Bitcoin.

"Solana has performed very well, but we have to keep in mind the way that the market shifts and the way that altcoins tend to perform in cycles relative to BTC."
