Core Scientific Contracts CoreWeave to Expand Its Artificial Intelligence (AI) Capacity

Bitcoin mining company Core Scientific now has a binding agreement with CoreWeave to increase its artificial intelligence (AI) capacity. The alliance, which is valued at $8.6 billion over 12 years, will see 500 megawatts of infrastructure developed.

Several Bitcoin miners—including companies like Hut 8 and HIVE—are moving resources to artificial intelligence, which is having a significant impact on profitability, especially after the fourth Bitcoin halving in April.

Core Scientific began working in artificial intelligence as early as 2019, well ahead of many other companies in the sector. “Core Scientific started out as a data center operator, mainly providing colocation services as opposed to proprietary mining,” said Wolfie Zhao, head of research at BlocksBridge Consulting.

This experience allowed the company to integrate artificial intelligence clusters into its operations while continuing to mine Bitcoin at a large scale.

CoreWeave's final contract option for ~120 MW of additional digital infrastructure to host high-performance computing operations has been exercised.

This expands CoreWeave's total contracted HPC infrastructure to ~500 MW of critical IT load at Core Scientific's facilities in Georgia.

Core Scientific’s early involvement in AI and expanding partnership with CoreWeave

As a result of this collaboration, Core Scientific's presence in the artificial intelligence market is being further strengthened. “It didn't just come out of the blue,” said Russell Cann, chief development officer of Core Scientific. “Our partnership with CoreWeave has been enduring.”

Together, we have worked on many engineering elements as they have grown their GPU cloud business, and the company is able to adapt infrastructure for specific use cases, which differentiates them from competitors, Cann added.

The operational and financial requirements for AI infrastructure are much higher than those for Bitcoin mining. “The capital requirements for purpose-built infrastructure and GPUs for AI workloads are so high that capital allocators can't afford to take operational risks,” said CJ Burnett, chief revenue officer of Compass Mining.

While Bitcoin mining sites can operate in remote locations with intermittent power, AI clusters require constant uptime and factor in backup systems and cooling techniques that drive up the costs.

In other news, CNF previously reported that BitFuFu has acquired an 80-MW Bitcoin mining farm in Ethiopia, aiming to reduce operational costs and increase capacity. With the addition of this new facility, BitFuFu will expand its hosting capacity to over 600 MW, further bolstering its global mining infrastructure.
