Conor McGregor Wants to Make Bitcoin a Strategic Reserve Asset in Ireland
May 12, 2025 at 04:37 pm
UFC icon and Irish presidential hopeful Conor McGregor is making headlines again—this time for his pro-crypto vision.
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) icon and Irish presidential hopeful Conor McGregor is making headlines again—this time for his pro-crypto vision. As Ireland prepares for its presidential election on November 11, McGregor is making a case for a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve to be implemented in the European country.
Aiming to completely reshape Ireland’s economic model with digital assets at its core, McGregor is merging his passion for cryptocurrency with his political aspirations.
McGregor’s presidential bid has taken a significant turn with his announcement of plans to meet El Salvador President Nayib Bukele at the upcoming Bitcoin National State Summit.
President Bukele is widely recognized for his initiative to introduce Bitcoin as legal tender and for spearheading El Salvador’s rapid Bitcoin accumulation strategy—currently standing at over 6,089 BTC, valued at over $635 million.
The Irish mixed martial arts legend is keen to learn from El Salvador’s successes in rolling out Bitcoin and how it can be used to create a new economic model for Ireland, potentially utilizing state funds to accumulate BTC as a reserve asset.
“A Strategic Bitcoin Reserve would give power back to the people and promote government transparency,” McGregor stated in a recent press release.

A Crypto-Friendly Candidate with Controversial Politics
McGregor’s political beliefs align closely with those of former U.S. President Donald Trump—particularly in his views on immigration and national identity. He is a strong opponent of the new European Union (EU) migration pact and is tapping into the sentiments of Ireland’s far-right electorate.
Despite his widespread popularity in the sports realm, McGregor remains a polarizing figure in the political sphere due to multiple legal issues and serious allegations that may make mainstream political acceptance difficult.
Charles Hoskinson May Join the Conversation
There are rumors circulating that Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson may also be meeting with McGregor to discuss cryptocurrency adoption in Ireland. However, this meeting has yet to be officially confirmed.
Will McGregor Reshape Ireland’s Crypto Future?
If elected, McGregor reportedly plans to build a Digital Asset Stockpile, which would include Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.
However, McGregor’s chances of securing the presidential nomination rest on his ability to gain the support of 20 Irish parliament members or four local councils.
The Irish people will head to the polls on November 11 to elect a new president to succeed outgoing President Michael D Higgins.
Ireland, with a population of 5 million, is currently feeling the heat of rising immigration tensions and political shifts as the country becomes more open to accepting diverse cultures. The new president will play a role in navigating these issues and forging a new vision for Ireland in the coming years.
