Coinbase's 'Solid' Earnings May Get Derailed by Low Volume, Fed Headwinds, Analysts Say

Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN) reported ‘solid’ earnings on Thursday, despite a decline in revenue from transaction fees, its main source of income. However, analysts are concerned that the company's earnings may be impacted by lower trading volume and the Federal Reserve's interest rate headwinds.

The crypto exchange reported better-than-expected second-quarter earnings, with a net loss of $1.09 billion, translating to a loss of $2.46 per share. Nevertheless, analysts polled by Street expected a loss of $2.66 per share for the quarter.

Coinbase reported total revenue of $1.45 billion, largely in line with analysts' estimates and a 36% decrease from the second quarter of 2021. The company's revenue from transaction fees decreased by 27% to $945 million, owing to a 28% decline in trading volume during the quarter.

Coinbase shares dropped on Friday morning, despite the company beating analysts' expectations on second-quarter earnings. The stock was trading down by more than 3%, as digital assets and broader equity markets fell.

Coinbase shares have now declined by about 70% so far this year, as cryptocurrencies and digital assets at large experienced a downturn in 2022. However, the crypto exchange stock outperformed the S&P 500 index, which is up by more than 15% year-to-date.

Coinbase shares closed on Thursday at $96.36. At the current price, Coinbase is valued at $36.3 billion.

Coinbase is set to announce its third-quarter earnings on October 26.
