Coinbase Pockets Privacy Concerns Exposed: Risks of Self-Custody and Base
May 05, 2024 at 07:01 am
Dogecoin developer Mishaboar has voiced concerns over the privacy implications of Coinbase Wallet and the broader Coinbase ecosystem. He warns that using Coinbase Wallet, especially when linked to an exchange account, compromises user anonymity and facilitates transaction tracking across multiple blockchains. Mishaboar emphasizes Coinbase's admission of collecting user data and its potential to share it with authorities, raising privacy concerns amidst increasing regulatory scrutiny. He also criticizes Coinbase's Layer-2 scaling protocol, Base, for its centralization and proliferation of VC-backed meme tokens.

Coinbase Pockets and Base: Unveiling the Privacy Pitfalls
In a bombshell revelation, Dogecoin group member and developer Mishaboar has raised grave concerns over the privacy implications associated with Coinbase Pockets and its related ecosystem, calling into question the security of users' financial transactions.
Coinbase Pockets, a popular smartphone wallet tailored for DeFi applications, has come under fire for allegedly downplaying the risks of its self-custodial nature. According to Mishaboar, the privacy concerns surrounding Coinbase Pockets escalate when linked to a corresponding Coinbase account. This linkage, he argues, eliminates user anonymity and creates a transparent trail of transactions across multiple blockchains.
Privacy concerns have long plagued the cryptocurrency industry, with regulatory bodies scrutinizing trading platforms for suspicious activities. Consequently, many users have migrated their assets from centralized exchanges to non-custodial wallets. However, this recent warning suggests that fears of intrusive monitoring persist even within these self-managed platforms.
Mishaboar emphasized Coinbase's lack of transparency in its data collection practices. "Coinbase admits to collecting a vast array of data in their Terms of Service, even if you don't connect the wallet to your Coinbase account," he wrote on his X account. "They gather information about your account, including your username and transaction history, and reserve the right to share collected data with authorities."
Beyond the wallet itself, Mishaboar also criticized Base, Coinbase's Layer-2 scaling protocol. Apart from its highly centralized nature, he noted that Base is saturated with venture capital-backed meme tokens. The rampant activity of these meme coins has artificially inflated Base's transaction metrics, eclipsing its competitors like Arbitrum.
In light of these privacy concerns, Mishaboar urged Coinbase Pockets users to prioritize ethical behavior. He stressed the importance of adhering to legal and tax obligations, highlighting the potential consequences of non-compliance. Coinbase, he argued, may not be a reliable ally in such situations.
United States tax authorities are intensifying their surveillance efforts to ensure tax compliance. As a testament to this commitment, billionaire investor Mark Cuban recently disclosed the payment of approximately $275 million in taxes. This revelation serves as a reminder of the importance of abiding by regulatory requirements within the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
Mishaboar's expose serves as a cautionary tale for users of Coinbase Pockets and the broader Coinbase ecosystem. By raising awareness about the potential privacy risks involved, he empowers users to make informed decisions about their financial transactions. The onus now falls on individuals to prioritize privacy protection and engage in responsible and compliant financial practices within the evolving digital asset landscape.
