Coinbase Hacker Taunts Investigator ZachXBT with "L bozo" Message Embedded in the Ethereum Blockchain
May 22, 2025 at 08:28 pm
A wave of controversy has swept through the crypto world after the hacker behind the recent Coinbase breach embedded a provocative message in the Ethereum blockchain, directly targeting well-known on-chain investigator ZachXBT.
A wave of crypto-focused articles has swept through the web, all converging on a single point of mockery: on-chain investigator ZachXBT has become the target of the Coinbase hacker.
The hacker, known for stealing 17,880 ETH and 15 BTC in December 2023, went a step further than typical cryptocurrency heist. Instead of simply amassing wealth, the hacker used their remaining ETH to perform a humorous cross-chain operation, converting the coins into DAI using THORChain.
The transaction was completed at an average rate of $2,528 per ETH, showcasing a keen focus on both anonymity and transactional efficiency. Moreover, the operation was executed using a single TX ID, further emphasizing the attacker’s aim to create a public, symbolic message.
This move follows the hacker's previous message on the Ethereum blockchain, which read "L bozo," accompanied by a link to a humorous YouTube video featuring former NBA player James Worthy.
The message was a response to XBT's on-chain investigation, which had identified the hacker and posted a sarcastic comment about the small amount of cryptocurrency the hacker was planning to use for a humorous cross-chain operation.
The hacker’s actions are a blatant display of how transparent blockchain networks can be used to send public messages, poking fun at the investigator and engaging the broader community in a playful commentary on the absurdity of the situation.
However, the core message of resilience and the spirit of decentralization remain largely untouched.
Many voices within the crypto space argue that this event doesn’t undermine the core principles of decentralization or open access. On the contrary, it highlights the ongoing need for stronger cybersecurity measures, without sacrificing user sovereignty.
In a related development, Binance and Kraken faced similar social engineering attempts but successfully thwarted them. Using AI systems and strict access policies, these exchanges prevented any unauthorized exposure of customer data.
These cases show that while threats persist, the crypto industry continues to evolve, proving its capacity to defend its foundation: decentralization, resilience, and freedom from censorship.
