Coinbase Facilitates First-Ever Crypto Transaction Conducted Between Two AI Agents
Sep 01, 2024 at 01:23 am
CEO Brian Armstrong took to Twitter on Friday to provide additional details. AI agents "can use USDC on Base to transact with humans, merchants, or other AIs.

Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN) has enabled its first-ever cryptocurrency transaction between two AI agents in a move to integrate artificial intelligence with crypto functionalities.
The agents exchanged crypto tokens for AI tokens, using USDC on Base, Coinbase's blockchain project, to facilitate the transaction.
CEO Brian Armstrong shared more details on X on Friday. "AI agents can use USDC on Base to transact with humans, merchants, or other AIs," he said, adding that these transactions are instant, global, and free.
AI agents currently face limitations due to their inability to own bank accounts or operate traditional payment systems.
"AI agents cannot get bank accounts, but they can get crypto wallets," Armstrong said, highlighting a key aspect of integrating AI in the crypto domain. He added that this marks a major step in enabling AI to exchange services and capabilities without human involvement.
Last week, Armstrong called on AI companies to integrate crypto wallets into their large language models (LLMs).
LLMs are the technology powering AI systems like Microsoft (MSFT)-backed OpenAI's ChatGPT and Claude, developed by Anthropic, which counts Amazon (AMZN) and Alphabet's (GOOGL) (GOOG) Google among its investors.
"Let's help AI agents get work done (on your behalf) and participate in the economy," he added.
