Coinbase's Ethereum Layer-2 Blockchain Base Soars Past $4 Billion in TVL
Apr 08, 2024 at 10:10 am
Coinbase's Ethereum layer-2 blockchain, Base, has witnessed a remarkable 13.2% surge in total value locked (TVL) over the past week, surpassing $4 billion for the first time. This growth positions Base as the third largest Ethereum layer 2 by TVL, trailing only Optimism and Arbitrum. Base's success is attributed to its high transaction count, which surpassed both Arbitrum and Ethereum, and its activity surge in the past week.

Coinbase's Ethereum Layer-2 Blockchain Base Surges Past $4 Billion in Total Value Locked
Coinbase's Ethereum layer-2 blockchain, Base, has experienced a significant surge in total value locked (TVL), surpassing $4 billion for the first time. This surge represents an increase of over 13.2% in the past week, a notable achievement for Base.
According to data from L2BEAT, as of April 7, Base's TVL stood at $4.15 billion. This includes $1.45 billion in canonically bridged value, which refers to assets locked on Ethereum and represented on Base, and $2.7 billion in natively minted assets.
Base has emerged as the third largest Ethereum layer 2 by TVL, trailing only Arbitrum, the current leader with $14.6 billion in TVL, and Optimism, which holds $8.1 billion in TVL. Base has surpassed Blast, which ranks fourth with a TVL of $2.7 billion.
Remarkably, Base is the only layer 2 among the top five by TVL to have recorded a gain in the past week. Starknet experienced the most significant TVL loss at 10.2%, followed by Optimism at 9.1%, Arbitrum at 5.5%, and Blast at 2.4%.
This surge in TVL for Base coincides with a notable increase in activity on the network. Base's 30-day transaction count has reached 50.34 million, surpassing Arbitrum's 40.1 million and Ethereum's 37.9 million.
Furthermore, Base's average daily transactions per second (TPS) have jumped by 29.7% over the past week, reaching 35.19 TPS in the past day. This exceeds the combined TPS of its layer-2 rivals Arbitrum and Ethereum, which recorded 16.61 and 13.91, respectively.
Additionally, Base has emerged as a major player in the recent memecoin surge. The meme token market capitalization on Base has soared to over $1.6 billion, representing a substantial 13% increase over the past day, as per data provided by CoinGecko.
The combination of TVL growth and increased activity suggests that Base is gaining traction within the Ethereum ecosystem. Its low transaction fees and fast transaction times have attracted users seeking an alternative to the often congested Ethereum mainnet. Coinbase's support and ongoing development efforts also contribute to Base's growing popularity.
As the Ethereum layer-2 landscape continues to evolve, Base has positioned itself as a viable contender for dominance. Its recent growth and strong performance bode well for its future prospects within the burgeoning Ethereum ecosystem.
