Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong Reflects on a Decade of Crypto Evolution

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong has shared his thoughts on the past and future decade of the cryptocurrency industry, highlighting his initial belief that payments would be the primary application for crypto.

In a post on social media platform X on Monday, Armstrong shared his perspective on the evolution of the cryptocurrency industry over the past decade.

To my mind, the most interesting thing about the first 10 years of crypto is that it feels like we barely scratched the surface. It’s funny to look back on how I thought payments was going to be the first killer app for crypto, and it turned out trading was the best business in crypto for the first 10 years. I guess I was biased because I love building products people can use every day ?

But now that we have stablecoins (USDC), layer 2 (Base), human readable names (ENS), and simpler onboarding (Smart Wallets), it has already started if you look at stablecoin payment volume.

Coinbase CEO on crypto payments: ‘I think payments will probably take off in the second 10 years.’

According to the Coinbase CEO, his initial expectation was that payments would play a primary role in the early days of cryptocurrency. However, to his surprise, trading became the most successful business in the crypto market for the first 10 years. Armstrong now believes that crypto payments will likely take off in the second 10 years.

Coinbase, a publicly traded company, is licensed to operate a cryptocurrency exchange in the United States. The crypto exchange also offers crypto custody services, as well as services related to blockchain technology and decentralized finance (DeFi).

Coinbase, Crypto Exchange, Leverages Paypal’s Venmo to Offer Crypto Payments

In recent news, Coinbase announced a partnership with Paypal (NYSE: PYPL) to enable crypto payments via Venmo. The integration will allow Venmo users to pay their contacts in cryptocurrency.

Coinbase CEO highlights the importance of learning and evolving in the crypto space, calling it a “good example of bias for action and iterating based on customer feedback,” and further noting that “action produces information.”
