Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong Proposes a Review of the Platform's Token Listing Process
Jan 27, 2025 at 06:06 pm
Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, has recently expressed alarm about the influx of tokens arriving at their platform. The head honcho of one of the biggest crypto exchanges in the world proposed a review of the Coinbase listing process.

Coinbase CEO Raises Concerns Over Influx of Tokens, Proposes Allow List, Block List Feature
As reported by a recent X post by Brian Armstrong, CEO of Coinbase, a staggering million tokens are being created each week, a figure that’s expected to continue rising. This poses a challenge for centralized exchanges like Coinbase, especially considering the regulatory scrutiny from bodies like the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Armstrong highlights the impracticality of manually reviewing each token for listing on Coinbase, given the volume and the exchange’s commitment to regulatory compliance. To address this issue, he proposes a system that utilizes an allow list and a block list, integrating customer reviews and automated scans of on-chain data to assess the reliability and risks of each crypto asset.
Moreover, the Coinbase CEO emphasizes the importance of deeper integration with native decentralized exchange (DEX) support, aiming to provide a seamless experience where customers "shouldn’t need to know or care" whether their trades are executed on a DEX or a centralized exchange.
Coinbase follows a stringent approval process for token listings, involving an initial request for a review, followed by the initial review itself, and concluding with due diligence and regulatory compliance checks.
Key Crypto Personalities Respond
Michael Saylor, MicroStrategy’s Executive Chairman, reacted to Armstrong’s post, underscoring the need for a proper digital assets framework in the United States.
