Coinbase Announces cbBTC, a Wrapped Version of Bitcoin, on Its Base Network

Aug 16, 2024 at 05:19 am

This strategic move aims to broaden Coinbase's tokenized asset portfolio and could potentially transform the wrapped Bitcoin landscape.

Coinbase Announces cbBTC, a Wrapped Version of Bitcoin, on Its Base Network

Coinbase is introducing cbBTC, a wrapped version of Bitcoin, to its Base network. This move aims to broaden Coinbase’s tokenized asset portfolio and could impact the wrapped Bitcoin landscape.

While specific details about cbBTC are yet to be disclosed, its introduction aligns with the increasing demand for tokenized Bitcoin on Ethereum-compatible chains. Coinbase’s previous experience with cbETH, a wrapped Ethereum token launched in August 2022, provides a relevant example. With around 210,000 cbETH tokens in circulation, it has seen significant adoption and trading volume.

Emphasizing the potential for Bitcoin on Coinbase’s layer-2 network, Jesse Pollak, the lead developer on Base, stated, "I love Bitcoin, am so grateful for its role in kickstarting crypto, and we're going to build a massive Bitcoin economy on @base.”

Coinbase's Entry to Wrap Market, Impact on WBTC

Anndy Lian, a blockchain expert, views cbBTC as an opportunity for Coinbase to provide a transparent alternative to Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC), especially given recent developments.

After BitGo, the company behind WBTC, partnered with BiT Global, which is reportedly linked to Justin Sun, concerns were raised about the latter's involvement. However, Sun clarified his role, stating he does not control WBTC reserves. Despite these assurances, WBTC remains the largest wrapped Bitcoin asset with a market capitalization of $9 billion.

With the introduction of cbBTC, there could be a shift in the dynamics of the wrapped Bitcoin market, offering a new level of transparency and trust to address ongoing concerns.

Coinbase's Role in Tokenized Asset Evolution

As Coinbase continues to introduce new tokenized assets, cbBTC marks a significant step in the progression of wrapped Bitcoin. Its launch on the Base network not only expands Coinbase's offerings but also highlights its role in advancing the crypto ecosystem with secure and transparent solutions.
